Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. For close to forty years, UN Habitat has been working in human settlements throughout the world, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes. In total, UN-Habitat works in over 90 countries to advance the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the local level, in accordance with the commitments and principles set out in the New Urban Agenda. The internship is located in the Partnerships and Local Governments Unit, External Relations, Strategy, Knowledge and Innovation Division, UN-HABITAT, Nairobi, Kenya.

The Office for External Relations, Strategy, Knowledge and Innovation (ERSKI) is organized into three branches, the Strategic Planning and Monitoring Branch, Knowledge and Innovation Branch and the External Relations and Partnerships Branch. ERSKI is responsible for strategic planning, programmatic direction and operationalization of UN-Habitat's focal point role for the New Urban Agenda, and 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the UN system and for coordination of Emergency Programmes. The External Relations and Partnerships Branch is charged with promoting strategic alliances to support achievement of the goals of adequate shelter for all, and sustainable urbanization and human settlements development. The Knowledge and Innovation Branch is responsible to lead the development of policies and procedures on results-based management and coordinates the preparation of the strategic plan, programme and budget plans and monitors and reports on global agendas and policy implementation; it leads and facilitates an enabling environment for use and deployment of innovation and data.

The Programme Support internship is for 6 months.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of the Associate Coordination Officer, the intern will contribute in the following ways: - Undertake research and support the management of the partnerships information including through the preparation of analytical reports and informatics to inform the development of a detailed database. - Service the stakeholder advisory group meetings, stakeholder forums, briefings and other meetings organized by the Unit. - Support outreach to partners for key events such as the Executive Board, the World Urban Forum and relevant consultative and expert group meetings. - Support the development and review of partnership reports, policies, guidelines, and presentations. - Ensure that all emails coming to the unit mailbox that require action from staff are handled in a timely manner within agreed turnaround times. - Assist with logistics of meetings organized by the Partnerships and Local Governments Unit. - Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements:

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.

Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).

Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred areas of study: Undergraduate or graduate degree in Communications, Business or any other related studies. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
