Sudan, surrounded by the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Libya and South Sudan, positioned next to East, West, South and North Africa, is surrounded by complex conflicts in an unpredictable, volatile and rapidly evolving region. Sudan is by size the third biggest country in Africa, with a diverse population of around 42 million people. Sudan’s children make up half of the total population, and the past two decades have seen their lives significantly improve: fewer girls and boys are dying before their fifth birthday, primary school attendance is increasing, immunization coverage is high and the country remains polio free. Still, millions of children continue to suffer from protracted conflict in Darfur, the Kordofan’s, and Blue Nile, from seasonal natural disasters, malnutrition and disease outbreaks, and from under-investment in basic social services. More than three million of Sudan’s school aged children are not in the classroom. UNICEF has been in Sudan since 1952 and continues with a presence in 12 of Sudan’s 18 states.

How can you make a difference?

Purpose of the position

Under the guidance of the Chief of Field Office – Kassala, the programme coordinator will help support the coordination and implementation of UNICEF’s programme across the three states. The programme coordinator provides guidance and management support throughout the programming processes, to facilitate the administration and achievement of the field office programme results. Particular attention will be given to laying the groundwork for a potential joint UNDP-UNICEF initiative “Strengthening Capacities for Peace and Social Cohesion in Kassala and Red Sea States and MCCT plus programme. The programme coordinator will be based in Port Sudan, Sudan, and will report to the Chief of Field Office for Kassala, Gedaref and Red Sea states. The programme coordinator will regularly visit Kassala and Gedaref to support programme implementation.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

Education

An advanced university degree in one of the following fields is required: Social Sciences, International Relations, Government, Public Administration, Public Policy, Social Policy, Social Development, Community Development, or another relevant technical field.

Experience

Five years of relevant professional work experience in programme coordination or other related field is required.

Experience working in a developing country is considered as an asset.

Background/familiarity with emergency is considered as an asset.

Language Requirements

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Arabic language is an asset.

UNICEF appointments are subject to medical clearance. Issuance of a visa by the host country of the duty station, which will be facilitated by UNICEF, is required for IP positions.
