Job Title: Programme Specialist, Climate Action

Duration: fixed-term contract until 31 August 2024

Location: Beijing, China

The World Economic Forum, committed to improving the state of the world, is the International Organization for Public-Private Cooperation. The Forum engages the foremost political, business, and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas.

Why are we recruiting

As China announced its 2060 carbon neutrality commitment, the Forum sees an opportunity to support key government and business partners in reaching the ambitious goal. The Forum will leverage its presence in China and expertise within its Mobility Platform; Energy, Materials and Infrastructure (ENMATI) Platform; Centre of Climate to create a dedicated Climate Action China programme in the country.

Through the Climate Action China programme, the Forum will collaborate closely with relevant Chinese government departments, state-owned enterprises, private companies, relevant business associations, research institutes and academic partners to help key stakeholders contribute to accelerating energy transition and decarbonisation in China and achieve its ambitious net-zero goals.

The Forum is seeking to hire a Programme Specialist to support the China Climate Action team and its programme delivery in China. This role will have four components:

  • Supporting the team in programme, project and event, workshop delivery
  • Supporting the development of programme overview materials, summaries and communications, media campaign for both internal and external collaborators
  • Connect programme impact to media and public engagement
  • Ensure the efficient operation of the team

The person will report to the Head of China Climate Action

Main responsibilities

  • Oversee programme coordination for the key events and workshops across the China Climate Action programme
  • Support on event delivery - in collaboration with members of the China Climate Action team – from participant management to coordination and alignment with digital success and TopLink teams in-house
  • Support team with engagement of external partner organizations and internal cross-house Forum teams to shape objectives, event curation, speaker management
  • Lead on the development of content curation and communication – from the development of programme summary documents, briefing materials, and programme communication materials to shape a coherent and connected overview of the Carbon Neutrality work across the portfolios
  • Liaise with public engagement team to support the Head of China Climate Action on development of communication strategy
  • Create compelling content and messaging for global media campaigns, collaborating closely with the Forum’s digital media team on key messages and news hooks across owned channels
  • Work with the Forum’s Digital Team to pitch, help write and externally place compelling op-eds
  • Collaborate with the Forum’s digital media team to build messaging toolkits for further amplification
  • Deliver regular media coverage reports to track reach of campaigns, showcase impact, measure results, monitor sentiment
  • Coordinate team meetings and activities

The successful candidate will be assessed on

  • Excellent event management and organizational skills
  • Excellent cross-cultural verbal, written and powerpoint communication skills
  • Interest and knowledge of climate change and related issues with the ability to translate complex content into simple language and communications materials for stakeholders
  • Strong writing skills to quickly draft press releases, op-eds, blogs, talking points under tight deadlines
  • Successfully juggling competing priorities, with shifting parameters, to deliver to the highest standards and to agreed deadlines
  • Professionalism in responding to requests and interacting with internal and external stakeholders
  • Dynamic team player and willing to support and collaborate to advance programme delivery
  • A great contributor to operational efficiency of the team, including level of support in making the best use of digital tools and effectiveness in following Forum processes

Preferred requirements and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or above in business administration, public finance, media and communications, journalism, public relations or equivalent.
  • Approximately 1-3 years of experience in event coordination, management and related communications in a demanding professional environment
  • Knowledge and interest in the climate change and carbon neutrality related agenda
  • Excellent written, digital and verbal communication skills with fluency in English and Mandarin
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Power Point, Excel); familiarity with Salesforce an advantage
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational, project and time management skills, and possess high attention to detail
  • Team player and self-starter who enjoys working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment
