You have:
- Minimum 3 years of postgraduate (Master’s degree) working experience in areas related to social protection and public systems.
- Experience of working in public health/food security/nutrition related activities at National and State level in collaboration with the Government.
- Experience identifying and defining nutrition issues/problems within a country.
- Working experience in implementing large and complex nutrition projects.
- Experience in working independently with minimum supervision, often in fluid and ambiguous situations will be required.
- Advanced University degree in Public Health Nutrition, Nutrition, Food Technology, Medicine or other relevant field or first university degree with additional five years of related work experience and/or trainings/courses.
- Fluency (level C) in English language.
- Fluency in Hindi.

ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT:
The World Food Programme (WFP), operating in India since 1963, aims to provide technical support to strengthening the government’s food safety-nets programmes in order to improve access to food for millions of vulnerable households throughout the country. Through its Country Strategic Plan (2023-2027), WFP India aims to support India in achieving their targets under Sustainable Development Goals 2 and 17.
WFP India is a partner to the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Ministry of Education , Food Safety Standards Authority of India and National Rural Livelihoods Mission, Government of India (GoI) as well as state governments of Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Kerala, Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh in the implementation of interventions aimed at improving the overall nutritional effectiveness of the food based safety nets
WFP nutrition and school feeding unit is responsible for designing, planning, implementing, reviewing and documenting appropriate pilots/ interventions; conducting need-based studies/ research; policy advocacy and providing technical support for scale-up of successful WFP pilots specific to the outcome. Social behaviour change communication (SBCC) accompanies all activities to help target audiences including school children know more about the benefits of good nutrition, appropriate child feeding practices and appropriate health and hygiene practices.
In line with its global commitment, WFP India’s current Country Strategic Plan (CSP), 2023-2027, articulates a strong commitment to enhancing livelihoods, gender equality and women’s empowerment by incorporating gender as a cross-cutting theme across all components of the plan and adopting a gender-transformative approach in its programmes. WFP aims to focus its efforts on promoting policies and interventions that interweave gender, women’s empowerment, and food security and nutrition at multiple levels.
JOB PURPOSE:
To provide support to policy and programme activities that effectively implements portfolio of support to the Government’s work in nutrition and school meals by providing technical assistance, innovation and capacity strengthening to the National and State governments to increase the nutritional effectiveness of government programmes and systems that improve nutrition so that the Government can achieve its targets under SDG 2, by 2030, in line with WFP India’s Strategic Plan.
The position requires a high level of technical competency in nutrition, fortification and innovation and will operate with considerable independence, manage a team to ensure planned objectives are achieved in full.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive, within delegated authority):
Under the direct reporting to the Head of Unit for Nutrition and School Meals, WFP India and overall guidance of the Country Director, will provide technical assistance to focus State governments on different aspects of nutrition while managing complex and large-scale nutrition programmes which contribute to meeting the nutritional needs of government beneficiaries of their food based social protection systems:
- Contribute towards the development of nutrition projects, plans and processes, ensuring alignment with wider nutrition policies and guidance.
- Serve as Deputy Head of the Nutrition and School feeding unit in WFP India Country Office, including support on human resource management and financial management for the unit.
- Provide project management support to specific and defined nutrition projects and activities, ensuring a coordinated approach with other units, in compliance with WFP standards and procedures.
- Track collate and analyse data to provide input into reporting activities and contribute to the preparation of accurate and timely reporting on nutrition activities that enables informed decision making and consistency of information presented to stakeholders.
- Liaise with implementing partners (internal and external) to monitor ongoing projects, ensuring effective collaboration, timeliness and efficiency, and highlight potential risks to project delivery.
- Research and analyse a range of policy and operational issues to inform the development of policies, programmes and activities that can strengthen the efficiency and effectiveness of government systems.
- Support the identification of potential partners and partnership negotiations to ensure a collaborative and holistic approach to meeting nutrition needs.
- Support the capacity building of WFP staff, partners and national and state government for national capacity strengthening.
- Guide and supervise staff, acting as a point of referral and supporting them with analysis and queries.
- Represent WFP at various National and Sub-national meetings and for a on nutrition to contribute to technical discussions and reflect WFP experiences.
