Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, UNEP works through its divisions as well as regional, liaison and out-posted offices and a growing network of collaborating centres of excellence. UNEP also hosts several environmental conventions, secretariats and inter-agency coordinating bodies. This UNV assignment is in of UNEP’s Policy and Programme Division which performs strategic planning, coordination, and monitoring of UNEP's programmes as well as coordinates UNEP's engagement with the wider UN system and global processes. Specifically, this position is in the Programme Performance Support Unit in the Policy and Programme Division of UNEP, Nairobi duty station. The Programme Assistant will report to the head of unit. The focus of this job is to contribute to effective implementation, monitoring and reporting with regards to UNEP's pro-grammes, decisions of UNEP’s Governing Bodies, operations, and other activities.

Under the direct supervision of Head of the Programme Performance Support Unit, Policy and Programme Division the national UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Provide administrative and meeting support to the unit’s functions. • Develop and maintain a generic database for programme performance tracking and populate this with historical data as well as new data. • Collect, analyse and interpret on a regular basis data related to the implementation of UNEP’s programmes to support monitoring and reporting of higher-level results. • Designs, builds and maintains large and complex data sets from multiple data sources while thinking strategically about uses of data and how data use interacts with data design. • Visualizes and communicates data discoveries in a variety of visual formats that provide relevant insights to the organization. • Implements any software required for accessing and handling data systems and data. • Undertakes research on current and emerging trends and prepares analytical summaries that can support strategic planning, implementation and communication of UNEP’s monitoring plan and framework. • Provide flexible and ad hoc support as and when required

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day). • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country. • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities. • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases. • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible

field related to information technology, statistics, environment, international development, project management, public administration, communications, or equivalent experience. An advanced university degree is advantageous • Demonstrated ability to perform in a team and deliver on time. • Experience in communication, data collection, database management and data visualization, and Excel is essential. • Experience in information technology systems management. • Good writing skills and knowledge of administrative processes, statistics, project cycle management and results-based management is an asset. • Ability to identify client needs, and work with them to develop programme solutions and meet timelines for service and product delivery. • Ability to work collaboratively and operate effectively within the organization and with partners in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic Environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity, including gender. • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development. • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment. Ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel. • Sound security and public health awareness; Have affinity with or interest in UNEP’s work, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighboring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
