Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. This internship is located at Headquarters of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm (BRS) Conventions in Geneva. The Secretariat of the BRS Conventions brings together the three leading multilateral environmental agreements that share the common objective of protecting human health and the environment from hazardous chemicals and wastes. The intern will work in the Programme Resources and Oversight Unit, in the Executive Office, and will perform the following tasks: • Conduct research on potential funding sources incl. non-state actors such as development aid and philanthropic institutions, as well as the private sector, in the areas of pollution / chemicals and waste to identify possible further funding opportunities. • Analyze global trends and policies related to resource mobilization and funding mechanisms. • Assist in the development of project proposals, grant applications, and funding requests. This may involve gathering and organizing data, drafting sections of the proposals, and ensuring compliance with donor requirements. • Monitor donors’ contributions and further develop the BRS database and data visualization tools for projects funded from voluntary contributions. This includes automation or enhancement of internal processes. • Conduct research on and innovate tools used by the Executive Office for oversight functions, and contribute to the team flow, by providing feedback on processes and potential areas of improvements. • Monitor and evaluate the impact and effectiveness of funded projects. This may involve data collection, analysis, and donor reporting on project outcomes and indicators. • Contribute to the development and review of policies, strategies, and guidelines related to resource mobilization and oversight. • Support the preparation of financial mechanism and resource mobilization related inputs, presentations or background documents for meetings and missions of the Executive Secretary / Executive Office colleagues. A suitable candidate demonstrates the following competencies: • Strong organizational skills and the ability to structure complex information. • Interest in global issues, environmental issues, and the United Nations. • Able to work in a multi-cultural environment and be aware of political sensitivities. • Responsible, curious, responsive, and enthusiastic. • Experience with data analytics. Proficient in using tools like Excel. • Knowledge of data visualization tools (e.g. PowerBI) would be an asset.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. Preferred area of study: Finance, Economics, International relations, Political science, Statistics, Environmental science. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
