Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the United Nations Global Compact in New York. The Programme Officer (Partnerships and UN Relations), reports to the Senior Programme Officer, of the Governance and Sustainability at the United Nations Global Compact.

The United Nations Global Compact is the United Nations' voluntary corporate sustainability initiative in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption. It revolves around ten universal principles drawn from four key international instruments in these areas. The Global Compact Office is the United Nations entity responsible for the overall management and coordination of the Global Compact initiative. It pursues two complementary objectives: (1) making the Global Compact and its principles part of business strategy and operations everywhere; and (2) facilitating cooperation among key stockholders by promoting partnerships and other collective action in support of United Nations, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Responsibilities Under the guidance of the Senior Programme Officer of the Governance and Sustainability, the Programme Officer (Partnerships and UN Relations), will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Participates in the development, implementation and evaluation of UN-business partnership projects and partnership activities to advance the 2030 Agenda and the UN Global Compact Organizational Strategy; monitors and analyzes the development and implementation of projects and initiatives focused on enhancing the positive impact of corporate policies and practices on sustainable development; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions.

  • Manages the implementation of relevant UN Global Compact strategies, policies and procedures regarding negotiation, management, monitoring and evaluation and reporting of UN Global Compact partnerships with external stakeholders.

  • Performs consulting assignments, on behalf of and in collaboration with Global Compact participants, by planning workshops, interactive sessions, and assisting to develop action plans and policy recommendations for GC Participants to enhance sustainable corporate practices and; and policy recommendations to UN staff and Government officials with a view to enhancing the ways in which the UN collaborates with business.

  • Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources.

  • Assists in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends in corporate sustainability and UN-business partnerships, preparation of evaluations and reports, including but not limited to the biennial report to the General Assembly under the item “Towards Global Partnerships” and surveys of UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes’ progress in partnering with the private sector.

  • Prepares various written outputs such as draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications with respect to multiple topics, such as the value of UN-Business collaboration in the areas of sustainable development and humanitarian action, and to assist Global Compact stakeholders better understand the challenges and opportunities of partnering with the UN system at global and local levels.

  • Provides substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences by proposing agenda topics, identifying participants and, preparing documents and presentations.

  • Undertakes outreach activities to encourage and engage GC participants to partner with the United Nations; conducts training workshops, seminars and makes presentations to UN staff, companies and Government officials about the value of UN-business collaboration and the progress being made by the Organization to more successfully interact with business.

  • Participates in or leads field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries, etc.

  • Performs other related tasks, as required.

  • Planning & Organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.

    Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in business administration, management, economics or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

    Work Experience A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration, or a related area, with relevance to the Untied Nations Global Compact Office programmes and mandates, is required. Experience in managing and supporting multi-stakeholder initiatives and multi-lateral processes is required. Experience working with the United Nations or equivalent international organization on matters related to business collaboration in promotion of corporate sustainability is required Experience in building partnerships across agencies, organizations, or sectors, is desirable. Experience with resource mobilization, advocacy and awareness-raising related to the 2030 Agenda is desirable. Relevant experience working in an international organization or comparable is desirable.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

    Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
