Description of task

Under the direct supervision of Programme Specialist Women Peace Security and Humanitarian Action, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Support programme implementation structures and mechanisms at the country level partnership between UN Women and Implementing Partners, under the leadership of the Women Peace Security and Humanitarian Action Specialist.
  • Support the selection of partners for project implementation in line with UN Women rules and regulations.
  • With the guidance of the Women Peace Security and Humanitarian Action Specialist, support the establishment of requisite small grants dispersal mechanism under the Women Peace Security and Humanitarian Action (WPSHA) Programme in line with priorities identified during initial stages of project implementation.
  • Support monitoring of implementation of UN Women projects and peacebuilding initiative and provide updates to management on progress and prepare required reporting in line with WPSHA Programming.

  • Supports CSO’s, advocates and women’s organizations to establish collective advocacy platform.

  • Support the development of position papers and plans for awareness raising campaigns on the importance of women’s participation in peacebuilding, as requested.
  • Support facilitating ‘Open Peace Days’ between UN senior leaders and women peace builders on their priorities for peacebuilding.

  • Support in identifying entry points aimed at promoting UN Women’s engagement in peacebuilding.

  • Support the provision of technical support and capacity building measures, as requested, to partners on generating gender-responsive peacebuilding and conflict mitigation mechanisms.
  • Work with the WPSHA in-country to support the development of quality gender and peacebuilding projects for Resource mobilization, in particular in the areas of conflict prevention and women’s participation in peace building
  • Provide inputs to Office reporting, documentations, website content related to peacebuilding and fulfil any other task as guided by the supervisor.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Peace and Security, social sciences, human rights, gender/women's studies, international development, or a related field is required.

Required experience:

12 Months

Experience remark:

  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) in the area of peace, security and humanitarian action
  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded in particular in Southern and
  • Eastern Africa;
  • Experience in monitoring and evaluation, donor reporting and capacity building is an asset;
  • Experience in the area of Peace and Security and Humanitarian Action is an asset;
  • Experience coordinating and liaising with government agencies and/or donors is an asset.

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent

Learning Expectations

Learning and development are a central part of the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment and take place before, during and after his or her assignment in the field. Ideally, offering diverse opportunities for learning and development aim to strengthen the volunteer’s skills and competences, improve the quality of the assignment and keep the volunteer’s motivation high.

Learning elements for the UN Youth Volunteer include the development of:

  • Professional skills: including specific competencies and reflection on assignment-related abilities; and on-the-job skills such as time management, problem solving, team building; and career preparedness such as interview skills, CV preparation, job searching.
  • Inter-personal skills: including communication and listening skills; multi-cultural awareness and cultural competency; and conflict and stress management.
  • Volunteering-related skills: including leadership; civic responsibility; and engagement and active participation.

Beyond the learning opportunities provided by UNV, the host agency will support knowledge and capacity development in the technical areas that are relevant to the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment. The host agency will provide, at its expense, UN Youth Volunteers with equal opportunity to participate in training courses and workshops offered to its personnel.

UN Youth Volunteers should be between 18 and 29 throughout the entire duration of their assignment. This assignment is funded by the Government of Finland, therefore only Finnish nationals are eligible to apply.
