Work Location
UN Headquarters, New York. This internship is designed to be in-person and full time (five days a week/35 hours) but can be adjusted to hybrid or remote based on request by successful candidate.
Expected duration
The internship is for three (3) months to start as soon as possible with an opportunity for extension up to a maximum of six (6) months, pending on the needs of the Office.
Duties and Responsibilities
The internship is located in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), Office of the Under-Secretary-General (OUSG), Programme, Monitoring and Evaluation Unit (PMEU). DESA supports the development pillar of the United Nations Secretariat, including by ensuring internation cooperation in the pursuit of sustainable development for all. OUSG supports the senior leadership of the Department in the overall coordination and management of its programmes and resources, as well as the implementation of Department-wide initiatives. PMEU is responsible for strengthening the monitoring and evaluation capacity of DESA’s work, and coordinating the Department’s yearly proposed programme plans in line with the Secretariat’s annual budget cycle. The unit, in close collaboration with the Department’s subprogrammes and offices, produces monitoring and evaluation reports for senior management decision making. It also serves as a focal point for evaluation by oversight bodies. The intern will report to the head of PMEU. Duties may include, but are not limited to: • Contribute to the coordination and drafting of monitoring and evaluation reports, including internal evaluation activities of the Department and evaluations conducted by oversight bodies; • Research, analyze and present information gathered from diverse sources on monitoring and evaluation; • Assist in data collection, including designing surveys and arranging interviews for DESA internal evaluations; support the review and analysis of responses; • Support the coordination of the implementation of findings and recommendations of internal and external evaluations; • Support the review of DESA’s annual proposed programme plan and budget by the Committee for Programme and Coordination and other Committees; • Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications/special skills
• Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). • Applicants must be computer literate and have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint and MS Teams. • Must have excellent drafting skills in English, ability to synthesize and extract essential information. • The successful applicant must be detail oriented, diligent, and deliver high-quality outputs. • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study in business administration, management, economics, political science, international relations, public administration, evaluation or a related field is required. • Expertise with data collection and visualization tools will be an advantage.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
