Org. Setting and Reporting

In the Declaration on the Commemoration of the Seventy-Fifth Anniversary of the United Nations, Member States called on the Secretary-General to make recommendations to advance our common agenda and address current and future challenges. In response, the Secretary-General launched the Our Common Agenda report (A/75/982) on 10 September 2021, which proposed a Summit of the Future. Member States agreed to hold the Summit in September 2024. They further agreed that the Summit would have an outcome – a Pact for the Future. The overarching purpose of the Summit and the Pact, agreed by Member States, will be to: reaffirm the UN Charter; reinvigorate multilateralism; boost implementation of existing commitments; agree on solutions to new challenges, and restore trust. The Summit is a high-level event, bringing world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future. The Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG) will oversee the preparations for the Summit. This position is located in the Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Policy in EOSG and will support the events management for the Summit of the Future and any pre-Summit events. The Programme Management Officer will report to the Under-Secretary-General for Policy and will work in close collaboration with the overall events manager and the Our Common Agenda team.

The EOSG, under the guidance of the Secretary-General (SG), work as a team pursuing in a cohesive and coherent manner, the SG’s vision, priorities and policies for his second mandate in office. It seeks alignment of the United Nations family with the SG’s vision, priorities and policies. It is guided by the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence and integrity and of achieving gender and regional balance among staff.

All EOSG unit will support the EOSG senior officials, as appropriate, depending on the tasks at hand, regardless of which senior official they formally report to, and will work together through a matrix team approach, as necessary, to ensure EOSG leads by example on integration and cross-pillar work.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Programme Management Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

• Support the planning and organizing of the Summit of the Future and pre-Summit events, including by facilitating partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, preparing substantive background materials, supporting logistics and administration, budgeting and resource mobilization, communications arrangements, preparing and monitoring workplans. • Provide substantive inputs, research and analyses towards the preparation and coordination of presentations, briefing notes, analytical briefs, background papers, report summaries, and other materials. • Support interactions with the UN system, Member States, and larger network of relevant global stakeholders. • Provide substantive support to strategic communications products. • Facilitate regular project management meetings between the Under-Secretary-General and focal points in Executive Office units, UN entities and external partners. • Performs other duties as required.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in political science, international relations, public administration, communications, journalism, media studies or related field is required. A first-level university degree in the above specializations or related fields, in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience, may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in international peace and security, development, political affairs, humanitarian affairs, or related area is required.

Experience preparing various written reports, documents and communications, including background papers, speeches, briefings, presentations, talking points, correspondence, etc., related to the sustaining peace agenda is required.

Experience in managing multi-stakeholder partnership processes, including with partners from governments, the United Nations, the private sector and/or civil society is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of a second official language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice

This position is temporarily available for 9 months.

If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

Pursuant to section 7.11 of ST/AI/2012/2/Rev.1, candidates recruited through the young professionals programme who have not served for a minimum of two years in the position of their initial assignment are not eligible to apply to this position.

While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.
