Org. Setting and Reporting

This post is located in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG), in the Sustainable Development Unit (SDU). The incumbent will report to the Deputy Director of SDU.

EOSG, under the guidance of the Secretary-General (SG), work as a team pursuing in a cohesive and coherent manner, the SG's vision, priorities and policies. It seeks alignment of the United Nations family with the SG's vision, priorities and policies. It is guided by the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence and integrity and of achieving gender and regional balance among staff.

All EOSG units will support the EOSG senior officials, as appropriate, depending on the tasks at hand, regardless of which senior official they formally report to, and will work together through a matrix team approach, as necessary, to ensure EOSG leads by example on integration and cross-pillar work.

Responsibilities

Under the overall direction of the Director of the Sustainable Development Unit and direct supervision of the Deputy Director, the Programme Officer will be an active member of the SDU/EOSG and responsible for the following duties:

• Provide support to key transitions projects and activities for the achievement of the SDGs, in particular, food systems transformation and ensuring that these result in job creation that are just and inclusive. • Liaise with relevant entities within the UN System such as the Food Systems Coordination Hub and the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for the implementation of the Food Systems Summit vision and FSS+2 call to Action. • Support the activities related to partnerships for food systems transformation in all its dimensions and in connection with jobs and social protection, including with Member States and other stakeholder groups. • Prepares/reviews substantive material for advising and briefing senior EOSG leadership and SDU on the food systems transformation landscape in its linkages with, climate, biodiversity, health, peace and security and the sustaining peace agenda, in coordination with relevant parts of the United Nations system – particularly activities of the Rome-based Agencies, the Food Systems Coordination Hub, the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social protection and other relevant initiatives/platforms. • Support the coherence of the food systems transformation efforts within the overall Decade of Action and Common Agenda. • Related to Jobs and Social Protection monitors policy developments in the international financial institutions, the World Trade Organization (WTO) and within relevant sectors of private business, with particular attention to their implications for food systems transformation, food security and nutrition and prepare appropriate advice for use senior EOSG leadership. • Organize and prepare draft briefing notes, background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, as needed. • Prepare/review written reports, SG reports, documents and speeches for senior UN management related to global health, food security and nutrition. • Perform other tasks in support of SDG achievement, food systems stocktaking, poverty alleviation, food security and nutrition issues within EOSG, as required.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in public administration, international relations, development or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years or equivalent progressively responsible experience in development in an areas of relevance to the topic - agriculture, food security, nutrition, rural development, economics, among others, is required.

Experience in managing multi-stakeholder partnership processes, including with partners from governments, the United Nations, the private sector and/or civil society, as well as in the development and implementation of policies and measures furthering food, jobs and/or social protection policies at the international level, is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of French or other official languages are desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

This position is temporarily available for 364 days.

The appointment or assignment and renewal there of are subject to the availability of the post or funds, budgetary approval or extension of the mandate.

If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

Pursuant to section 7.11 of ST/AI/2012/2/Rev.1, candidates recruited through the young professionals programme who have not served for a minimum of two years in the position of their initial assignment are not eligible to apply to this position.
