UNEP’s Corporate Services Division (CSD) is the guardian of the organization’s corporate interest, mitigating its exposure to risk and supporting the organization with management tools, plans and related capacity building. It oversees the UN Environment Programme’s efficient and effective management, in line with UNEP’s accountability requirements, rules, regulations and UN Core Values.

The Administrative Officer will support the Deputy Director of Corporate Services Division on key tasks and work assignments related to the coordination of technical and operational issues.

Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Director of Corporate Services Division, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  1. Supports the Deputy Director on technical and functional issues across the operational spectrum that impact the effectiveness of the Division and the organization.
  2. Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects, etc.; monitors and analyzes programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions.
  3. Assist in the preparation and finalization of various materials including correspondence, background papers and briefing notes, in the compilation of inputs into reports, as well as the preparation of summaries of discussions and outcomes of meetings.
  4. Supports development, deployment, maintenance and continuous improvement of CSD’s planning and monitoring processes, tools and documentation.
  5. Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources,
  6. Assists in policy development, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of evaluations or other research activities and studies.
  7. Undertakes survey initiatives; designs data collection tools; reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares conclusions
  8. Prepares various written outputs, including on policy issues, administrative matters and local conditions
  9. Provides substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, etc.
  10. Liaises with the Heads of Units within the Division, as well as with the Director’s Office and the Heads of Divisions/offices outside the Corporate Services Division.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighboring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services, and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN-HABITAT and UNEP. The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment are modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location are a highland cool and warm tropical climate.
