Org. Setting and Reporting The position is located in the Office of the Director-General of the United Nations Office in Geneva in the SDG Lab. The incumbent reports to the P5 Chief of Section.

Responsibilities Under the general supervision of the Director the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

Management, programme guidance and reporting: - Serves as a key advisor to the Chief of Section, providing authoritative advice and guidance to ensure the strategic and operational planning, coordination and delivery of key projects and activities of the team, including work planning and facilitation of human resources and budget planning and oversight. - Oversees the monitoring, evaluation and learning function of the Lab and manage the assigned team focal points in preparing monitoring and evaluation activities, providing guidance and mentoring to focal points with their respective duties. - Works closely with UNOG’s focal points tasked with supporting the implementation of the SDG Lab portfolio and grant agreement and ensure timely delivery of administrative and operational tasks across human resources and budget implementation. - Undertakes the function of Officer-in-Charge, displaying management excellence and corporate citizenship throughout.

Communications and outreach: - Conceptualizes, designs and executes the overall public information and outreach strategy, programme and activities for the Lab, with special attention to social media, visual communications, editorial, content development, media outreach and branding. - Provides technical and policy advice on complex public information and communications issues; oversees the development of diverse materials (e.g., briefings, questions and answers) for use by the Chief of Section, the Director-General and other senior UN officials. - Directs SDG Lab staff, consultants and interns on effective implementation of the communications and outreach strategy, ensuring appropriate contributions are made to amplify impact; plan and allocate work assignments, including management of the communications team and other team members supporting communications and outreach activities. - Creates and maintains networks of high-level communications and advocacy contacts and seek out opportunities to position the SDG Lab and monitors its value added of engagement. - Provides expert advice on media relations and positioning of the Lab; Acts as spokesperson for the Lab and Chief of Section as appropriate; represents the Lab in important meetings, conferences and events.

Donor relations and reporting: - Leads on reporting to the Lab’s donors and serve as coordinator of reporting activities throughout the year, including overseeing the development of the Lab’s annual and mid-year reports including oversight of compilation of results data. - Supports the Chief of Section in coordinating fundraising initiatives, including broadening and deepening existing relationships with the Lab’s current donors and building new ones, e.g., Member States, foundations, private sector, etc. - Acts as the Lab’s donor focal point at the operational level, maintaining a proactive relationship on all donor relations aspects, from reporting to communications, and representing the Chief of Section in donor meetings.

Competencies Professionalism: Excellent knowledge of the SDG ecosystem in Geneva, including the full range of development and humanitarian actors and institutions operating in or/from International Geneva is highly desirable. Demonstrated diplomatic, cultural sensitivity and negotiating skills. Proven knowledge and understanding of intergovernmental processes relevant to sustainable development issues, including a detailed comprehension of the 2030 Agenda; Ability to provide specialized advice across a broad range of programmatic and operational areas to the Chief of Section; Shows pride in work and in achievements. Demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter. Is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results. Is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns. Shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. Takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.

Allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work. Foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning. Monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary. Uses time efficiently.

Judgement/decision making: Identifies the key issues in a complex situation, and comes to the heart of the problem quickly. Gathers relevant information before making a decision. Considers positive and negative impacts of decisions prior to making them. Takes decisions with an eye to the impact on others and on the Organization. Proposes a course of action or makes a recommendation based on all available information. Checks assumptions against facts. Determines that the actions proposed will satisfy the expressed and underlying needs for the decision. Makes tough decisions when necessary.

Education An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in political science, international relations, communications, journalism or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience At least seven years of relevant professional experience in the field of public policy, international relations, communications, media, journalism or related field is required.

Experience in advising senior officials on operations across human resources management, budget preparation, and resource mobilization is desirable

Experience in drafting speeches, talking points and briefs on the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs is desirable

Experience as a spokesperson or senior strategic communications officer is desirable.

Experience in writing annual donor reports and coordinating periodical reporting activities is desirable.

Experience supervising an office, unit or section within the United Nations Common System or a comparable international organization is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working language of the UN Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
