Org. Setting and Reporting The Secretary-General’s Our Common Agenda report was launched on 10 September 2021, pursuant to the mandate given to him by the General Assembly in the declaration on the commemoration of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the United Nations (A/RES/75/1)). The report contains some 90 proposals and recommendations, to be taken forward by UN Member States, the UN system and partners. Many of these recommendations build on existing processes and/or mandates, including the Sustainable Development Goals, which will be maximized to the extent possible. However, Our Common Agenda also sets out a number of important recommendations and milestones in its own right across a wide array of substantive and thematic issues.

The report has been welcomed by the General Assembly (A/RES/76/6), and significant process of follow-up is now envisaged by UN Member States under the leadership of the President of the General Assembly, with the support of the UN system. Not least, this includes the organization of a high-level, multi-track, intergovernmental Summit of the Future in September 2023, covering issues such as peace, digital cooperation, outer space, future generations and major risks.

This position is located in the Our Common Agenda team in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General in New York. It will be focused on supporting the intergovernmental process and Member States negotiations leading up to the Summit of the Future in particular, and Member State follow-up to the Our Common Agenda report more broadly. The position will also support UN system coordination efforts. The Programme Management Officer will report to the Director of the Our Common Agenda team as well as the team lead for Member State engagement, and will be funded from extra-budgetary resources.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Programme Management Officer will be responsible for the following duties: - Support liaison and communications with Permanent Missions in New York and capitals as needed, on implementation of Our Common Agenda, with a focus on the intergovernmental process in the lead up to the Summit of the Future. - Act as focal point for EOSG support to the Office of the President of the General Assembly on Our Common Agenda, as required. - Prepare speeches, key messages and background notes to support engagement with Member States on Our Common Agenda by senior members of EOSG. - Support coordination and outreach on Common Agenda implementation with the UN system, including on Summit of the Future tracks. - Provide substantive backstopping to consultative and other meetings, workshops, retreats and conferences, to include preparation of documents, key messages and briefing notes, and presentations, etc. - Support outreach and fundraising activities; prepare and/or deliver presentations on assigned topics/activities. - Perform other duties as required.

Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in political science, international relations, law, public administration, or related field is required. A first-level university degree in the above specializations or related fields, in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience, may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political affairs, governance, diplomacy or external relations is required.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, with demonstrated ability to work in politically sensitive contexts or to support high-level political processes is required.

Experience at the international level or work with the United Nations is strongly desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required; Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice This position is temporarily available until 31 December 2022. Any extension will be subject to the availability of the post or funds, budgetary approval or extension of the mandate.

If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
