Duties and Responsibilities

The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote inclusive economic, social and environmental development and support regional cooperation and integration in the Asia-Pacific region. ESCAP's role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership, through its analytical, normative and technical cooperation work, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asia-Pacific region. The internship is located in the Capacity Development and Partnerships Section (CPS) of the Strategy and Programme Management Division (SPMD). The internship is for a duration of 3 months with possibility of extension to a maximum of 6 months, depending on the needs of the division. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the division/section to which they are assigned. The intern will assist the Capacity Development and Partnerships Section of the Strategy and Programme Management Division. Under the guidance of Professional Staff in the Section, main duties will be related to (but not limited to) the preparation of the Technical Cooperation Highlights 2024-2025 publication and the preparation and execution of the 7th Asia-Pacific Directors General Forum for South-South and Triangular Cooperation in relation to the below tasks: 1. Assist in collecting and compiling/organizing data and perform descriptive statistical analysis on technical cooperation activities-related reporting, financial contributions and expenditures by thematic and budget sources groupings; 2. Conduct research and assist in the compilation and analysis of ESCAP success stories through technical cooperation projects with different partners; 3. Coordinate and work closely with colleagues in the Capacity Development and Partnerships Section, and the Planning and Budget Section, as well as colleagues in all divisions and offices across ESCAP in conducting research and data compilation; 4. Assist with conceptualizing and preparing the outline and structure of the Technical Cooperation Highlights publication and any other related information materials, briefs and presentations; 5. Support data assimilation and analysis of information on development partners and South-South cooperation initiatives through utilization of artificial intelligence tools; 6. Assist in organizing logistics for the events, including managing registration, sending invitations, supporting physical exhibition activities, and drafting thank-you letters, among others; 7. Support outreach and information dissemination activities related to the Forum or meetings, including drafting information notes and/or summaries of events; 8. Participate in and contribute to other day-to-day operational tasks of the section, as appropriate. This may include for example, servicing requests for information, support for developing presentations, infographics and provide other assistance as needed.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
