Duties and Responsibilities

This position is located in the Global Maritime Crime Programme (GMCP) based in Nairobi, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) The internship is for six (6) months. Based at the Regional Office for Eastern Africa (ROEA) in Nairobi, the Southern Route and Port Security team of the Global Maritime Crime Programme (GMCP) plays a key role in strengthening maritime law enforcement in the Indian Ocean West region. The team is primarily responsible for coordinating capacity building activities for Maritime Law Enforcement agencies in Comoros, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Pakistan, South Africa, and Tanzania, and promoting regional cooperation to better counter crimes within the maritime domain. The team has a programming presence in Kenya, Madagascar, South Africa and Tanzania. The internship is UNPAID and full-time, 5 days per week (40 hours). The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Professional staff of the Southern Route and Port Security team of the Global Maritime Crime Programme. This internship is exclusive to applicants who possess full professional fluency in French, in order to adequately support Southern Route and Port Security team activities across Eastern and Southern Africa. The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to: • Assist with planning of project implementation in the Western Indian Ocean Region, • Assist in the preparation of technical assistance workshops, meetings, high-level events and conferences, • Assist with the drafting of website articles, social media posts and other visibility outputs, • Assist with attending meetings and note taking, • Provide support in M&E and internal and external reporting, • Provide support for regional missions where GMCP carries out programme activities, including administrative support, visibility work, data collection, and other related tasks, Contribute to the preparation of written outputs, including presentations, briefing notes, letters and sections of reports relating to maritime crime issues in the region., • Assist to translate documents and materials, • Perform other tasks as necessary.

Qualifications/special skills

• Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Full fluency in spoken and written French and English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat
