Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP's Corporate Services Division safeguards UNEP’s corporate interests by providing it with tools and plans for efficient and effective management and by managing its exposure to risk. It does so in line with the core values of the United Nations as well as all other relevant rules, regulations, and accountability requirements. Within the Corporate Services Division, the European Commission Programme Management Unit (PMU) is located in Nairobi and Brussels and manages the EC-UNEP Framework Agreements. The CSD PMU in Brussels coordinates the Framework Agreements in close relationship with the Divisions and Multilateral Environmental Agreement Secretariats, as well as the EC Directorate General Environment.

The UNEP CSD Brussels internship is for 6 months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Possibility of teleworking several times a week (arrangements to be determined with office activities).Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer of the UNEP CSD Programme Management Unit in the Brussels Office, the intern will contribute to the coordination work of the CSD EC Programme Management Unit in charge of the implementation of the EC-UNEP Framework Agreements and other matters pertaining to the operational partnership with the European Commission. This will notably entail: 1. Project reporting a. Four-monthly monitoring – drafting templates, messages, follow up b. Annual Project Reporting – draft preparation of exercise (emails, lists, templates) c. Annual Strategic Performance Overview Reporting & final reporting on closing of Framework Agreement – consolidation of supporting documents 2. Project monitoring a. Contributes to the day-to-day monitoring of the portfolio of projects b. Follows up and drafts early reminder messages on closure for PMU sending c. Drafts follow up messages to project teams / focal points d. Contributes to the development of best practices, templates and guidance materials 3. Keeping of the PMU archives updated a. Consolidates and updates records with all relevant documentation and information b. Reorganizes records as necessary c. Follows up and consolidates the archives for the closed projects 4. Support to management of internal & external meetings a. Drafts minutes of internal & external meetings (UNEP meetings, EC-UNEP meetings) and follows up and monitors the implementation of the action plans b. Tasks – keeps MS Teams PMU team task list up to date c. Develops presentations for UNEP internal and external meetings d. Perform data gathering and analyses to feed into various written inputs 5. Any other duty may be required or assigned by the Head of CSD EC Programme Management Unit

Qualifications/special skills

  • Applicants must be enrolled in at least the third year of a first university degree program or in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) program at the time of application, commencement and during the internship.
  • Preferred area of study: political science, international relations, European / environment studies, or other relevant studies
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications; and suitable IT knowledge to develop data driven products (dashboard, gantt-chart);
  • Very good writing and analytical skills (synthesis of texts, drafting of articles, etc.)
  • Close attention to detail
  • Have a demonstrated interest in Environmental issues, the United Nations, and/or international governance and a proven knowledge of the European Union’s institutions and policies.

Languages

Fluency in English is required, knowledge of French an asset.
