Org. Setting and Reporting The position is located in the Environment for Europe and Sustainable Development Section of the Environment Division, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, Geneva.

UNECE Environment Division contributes to the overall objectives and mandate of UNECE as a multilateral platform facilitating greater economic integration and cooperation among its member States, and to the broad aim of the Environment subprogramme to safeguard the environment and human health, and to promote sustainable development in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by supporting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Chief of Section and Aarhus Unit Leader of the Environment for Europe and Sustainable Development Team at the Environment Division, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

(a) Documentation and meetings: Plans, forecasts and monitors document and publication preparation and distribution; formats, checks, corrects and prepares final printing layout of policy reviews, publications and documents prepared for the Team, including extraction of texts, statistical data, tables and graphs from computerized databases and files with the use of word and in-design processing, spreadsheet and database software for publications; liaises with other UN staff involved in documents control, translation services, printing and publication to ensure the timely delivery of publications and documents.

Makes all necessary practical arrangements for meetings; services meetings, both expert and intergovernmental; prepare and follow-up procedure for financial assistance to meeting participants using Umoja. Contributes to activities of expert groups, including contact with members and support to the meetings. Liaise with security, meeting room arrangements, documentation and invitations.

(b) General administration: Maintains contact between the Team of the secretariat and national experts or institutions by drafting and mailing e-mails, faxes, letters, etc. including at own initiative, the clarification of issues arising in the participation of experts in the team’s programme; carries out other support functions for the Team, as required; responds to external enquiries, either directly or by channeling requests to the appropriate staff member, assists during workload periods and during absence of the other secretaries.

(c) Database and web site management: Web page development. Participates in the maintenance and updating of web sites for the Team. Prepares multimedia presentations for the Team for Missions, member States, meetings and other audiences, as needed.

Knowledge of latest word-processing, spreadsheet, database and web site software, such as Drupal, Word, Access database, PowerPoint, Excel (and their upgrades). Ability in documents and publications preparation, formatting processing and submission. Shows pride in work and in achievements. Demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter. Is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results. Is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns. Uses time efficiently.

Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals. Solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others. Places team agenda before personal agenda. Supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position. Shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.

Education Completion of secondary school or its equivalent commercial school.

Work Experience A minimum of five (5) years of experience with computer software and basic programming is required. Out of these, three (3) years of such experience within the United Nations Common system is desirable.

Languages English and French are working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French or Russian is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice This position is available from 15 April 2021 and is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules.
