The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global, regional and national levels. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP is an Accredited Entity of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

To continue to strengthen this partnership with the GEF, UNEP is seeking a United Nations Volunteer (UNV) Program Management Assistant to join the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Coordination Unit, to assist the GEF Coordination Unit team to support and improve programme management and coordination functions.

Under the overall guidance of the GEF Coordinator, Corporate Services Division, at the GEF Coordination Office, the UNV volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Provide support in the coordination of programme/project planning and preparation work for GEF programme/project initiatives, including monitoring the status of programme/project proposals and receipt of relevant documentation for review and approval, • Provide support in the review of project documents, for completeness and compliance with relevant rules and procedures prior to submission for final approval and signature; identifying inconsistencies; distributing project documents to relevant parties upon approval. • Provide support to the liaison function with to the diverse organizational units to initiate requests, obtain necessary clearances, and process and follow-up on administrative actions and functions, e.g. project/program approval, project/program submissions, project/program implementation reporting process. • Supporting GEF project/programme business processes and information flows, ensuring that UNEP/GEF project/programme data is well curated across UNEP. • Assist in compiling, summarizing, and presenting basic data on specific programmes/projects and related topics or issues • Support knowledge management activities, including updates to the UNEP intranet ‘wecollaborate’, GEF Portal System, UMOJA IPMR, Open Data Systems, PIMs etc • Drafts correspondence and communications related to all aspects of programme/project administration as well as maintains files (electronic/paper) and internal databases. • Serves as a focal point for coordination of administrative and human resources actions e.g. recruitment process and appointment of personnel, time administrator, travel arrangements, organising training/workshops/meetings, procurement of equipment and services, etc. • Provides guidance and training to new/junior staff. • Perform other related duties as required.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to: • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and taking an active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities; • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

programme or project administration, technical cooperation or related area is required. - Experience with the Microsoft Office suite and a related platform (e.g. Sharepoint, Teams) is required. - Experience with data analysis and analytics is required. - Experience in managing global funding programmes such as Global Environment Facility (GEF) is highly desirable. - Knowledge of another official UN language would be an advantage.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighbouring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many upcountry destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN-HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society in the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of the assignment are modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location are a highland cool and warm tropical climate.
