Background

UNDP works in 160+ countries and territories, helping to achieve the eradication of poverty, and the reduction of inequalities and exclusion – while promoting sustainable and ‘green’ pathways to development.

In Islamic Republic of Iran, UNDP, as a partner of the Government, has been working since 1966 to support fulfilment of the country’s development aspirations. UNDP has also been engaging closely with other development partners, such as academic institutions and the private sector, by providing knowledge products, policy and technical assistance, and innovative development solutions for more than 50 years. Connecting to UNDP Global network of expertise and South-South cooperation are an integral part of UNDP’ work. UNDP is committed to helping Iran achieve the National Development Goals (NDP) and the Global Goals (SDG) as articulated in the Country Programme Document.

UNDP Iran fulfils its development mandate by (a) designing and implementing projects as well as mobilizing resources in Environmentally Sustainable Development, Health and Development, Resilient Economy and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management; and (b) delivering on its ‘integrator’ role engaging with the UN Resident Coordinator Office, sister UN agencies and other – public and private – partners.

UNDP is looking for interns to support ongoing efforts on enhancing horizon scanning and systemic thinking to adapt and align with current and emerging development priorities.

Duties and Responsibilities

The main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Support development of situation analysis on issues related to UNDP’s key programme areas including through horizon scanning, systems thinking, and anticipatory/future informed development scenarios and trends;
  • Support enhancement of project reporting including through content review, editing, etc;
  • Support consolidation of lessons learnt, past experiences, approaches and models to inform future programming;
  • Contribute to resource mobilisation through inputs to development of concept notes, proposals to donors;
  • Support development of communication and knowledge materials and products, including development of infographics, blogs, micronarratives, etc;
  • Attend relevant government, donor and other stakeholder meetings and take meeting minutes;
  • Assist in organisation of high level meetings/missions including through drafting presentations, briefing packs, etc

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Candidates must meet at least one of the following educational requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
  • Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.
  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertake the internship as part of this program.

Field of study: international relations, development studies, economic development or any other relevant field

IT skills:

  • Knowledge and a proficient user of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.).

Language skills:

  • The intern must be fluent in English language. Knowledge of Farsi is desirable but not required

Internship Conditions

  • The intern will be paid a monthly stipend by UNDP as per stablished rate for Iran.
  • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, passports, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of:
  1. The nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or
  2. The intern.
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship.
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship.

  • Selected candidates for internships must show proof of valid medical insurance for the duty station in which they will intern. Applicants that are neither nationals nor residents of the duty station, the insurance must include adequate coverage in the event of an injury or illness during the internship duration which:

  1. Requires transportation to the home country or country of residence for further treatment;
  2. Results in death and requires preparation and return of the remains to the home country, or country of residence.
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
