Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Based in Abu Dhabi, the UN Women Liaison Office for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is working to strengthen partnerships, mobilize resources and raise awareness to advance UN Women’s key priorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), GCC countries, and beyond. The office is the first of its kind in the GCC and is one of seven UN Women liaison offices (LO) in the world. The office main priorities are:

  • Enhance coordination between different sectors to drive the mandate of UN Women in the UAE and GCC countries.
  • Strengthen partnerships to drive Sustainable Development Goal 5 on advancing gender equality; further the women, peace, and security agenda.
  • Realize progress on the women’s economic empowerment agenda in the UAE and GCC.

On 9 November 2020, the GCC LO announced the launch of the UAE National Chapter of the Unstereotype Alliance. UAE became the sixth country globally – and the first in the entire Middle East and North Africa region – to launch a National Chapter of the Unstereotype Alliance, following Brazil, Turkey, South Africa, Japan, and the United Kingdom. The GCC LO is working closely with diversified stakeholders to implement different activities during EXPO 2020. Expo 2020 was scheduled to be a World Expo hosted by Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and was planned for 20 October 2020 – 10 April 2021. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Arab Emirates, the new dates are 1 October 2021 – 31 March 2022.

Therefore; UN Women LO for the GCC seeks to hire an intern to support the UAE efforts in implementing the planned activities under EXPO 2020 and provide support to the UAE national chapter of the Unstereotype alliance.

Duties and Responsibilities

EXPO events and activities:

  • Support the Operations Team in administrative responsibilities including booking of tickets and other logistical arrangements needed during EXPO;
  • Support the Communications Team in day-to-day management of the social media accounts and compiling information required for content development and reporting;
  • Compile information from different sources and produce analytical reviews and synopses;
  • Collect information and data to be used for preparation of briefing notes, talking points, and reports, as required;
  • Contribute to data entry and database and updating/revision of various documents;
  • Support preparations for the GCC LO activities and events;
  • Support in editing and revision of reports, briefs, and other documents, as needed;
  • Support in additional tasks and projects of the GCC LO, as required.

UAE National Chapter of the Unstereotype Alliance:

  • Support the drafting and the implementation of the UAE workplan in close coordination with the UA in HQ and the members.
  • Support in arranging meetings and events with the UAE chapter members and potential new members.
  • Support in conducting due diligence process for new members.
  • Draft minutes of meeting and reports as needed.
  • Collect information and data to be used for preparation of briefing notes, talking points, and reports as required.
  • Prepare analytical reports, briefing notes, background papers, summaries, talking points and others as requested.

By the end of your assignment, you should be able to:

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • University studies in one of the following disciplines: gender studies, human rights, international relations, or business management is required.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation, or Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language and/or Arabic a distinct advantage.

Renumeration:

Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.

The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
