- Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work in a multicultural environment
- Proficiency in English (knowledge of additional South Asian languages is an asset)
- Interest in freedom of expression, media development, and UNESCO's mandate in South Asia
Contract
This is a UNV National University contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National University contracts.
The UN Volunteer will assist the Communication and Information Sector of the UNESCO New Delhi Regional Office for South Asia in the implementation of its programme in South Asia to achieve the above stated Organization’s mission and objectives
Under the overall authority of the Director of UNESCO New Delhi Regional Office for South Asia and supervision of Advisor for Communication and Information, the UN University Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
- Assist in the organization and delivery of capacity building workshops and meeting of the CI programme/projects related to freedom of express, safety of journalists and media viability;
- Participate in monitoring and analysing delivery of programme activities and projects to ensure effective implementation and impact.;
- Support research efforts and contribute to the CI sector’s planning for new projects and activities, including background research and data collection;
- Assist in drafting of reports on CI activities, partnerships, and achievements in the region;
- Create human-interest stories highlighting the impact of UNESCO’s projects and initiatives across South Asia;
- Assist in the development of a communication plan in close coordination with the supervisor for all extra-budgetary projects, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and donor requirements;
- Assist in drafting press releases, website articles, social media content and speeches related to CI programme and events;
- Undertake any other task assignment by the supervisor.
Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to: • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for in-stance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities; • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

New Delhi, as a duty station, presents a dynamic and diverse environment. The living condi-tions in this vibrant metropolis offer a mix of cultural richness, historical significance, and mod-ern amenities. The city provides various housing options, catering to different preferences and needs. New Delhi's cosmopolitan atmosphere allows for easy integration into its multicultural society. While the city boasts a range of international schools, medical facilities, and recrea-tional opportunities, it is essential to be mindful of factors such as air quality and traffic con-gestion. Additionally, due diligence is essential, especially when it comes to being cautious with street food and water.
As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. This position is based in New Delhi. National UN Volunteers are part of the malicious insurance plan. National UN Volunteers are expected to be culturally sensitive and adjust to the prevailing culture and traditions
