This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Description of task

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Advisor, School Feeding Unit, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Support the team to broaden the understanding and knowledge of the role of school feeding in contributing to education, social protection and other outcomes, especially in emergencies;
  • Participate to the elaboration of different reports and analysis building evidence on school feeding in emergency and protracted crisis as well as education and social protection;
  • Synthetize available evidence and lessons learnt on a School Feeding; and develop a master sheet database;

  • Support the team with the draft of key documents and communication material to sustain an active and fruitful participation in multiple education related fora such as Local Education Groups (LEGs), Global Partnership for Education (GPE), SDG 4 Arab region working group, Education Can’t Wait, No Lost Generation, Life Skills and Citizenship Education Regional Initiatives.

  • Liaise with the local JICA office to seek possibilities of collaborative activities between WFP and JICA in line with IFNA (Initiative for Food and Nutrition Security in Africa), SHEP (Smallholder Horticulture Empowerment and Promotion), CARD (Coalition for African Rice Development) and education (incl. pre-school education) programs, where appropriate.

In addition, the UN Volunteer will support the team to explore innovative approaches and ideas which are already existing outside, to build on existing best practices in the region and to share knowledge acquired:

  • Research reports and relevant information on school meals programmes produced by major partners, such as the World Bank, USAID, INGOs, and other UN partner agencies (UNICEF, UNESCO, FAO).;

  • Research, collect and consolidate lessons learned and best practices from RBC region on Early Childhood Development (ECD), adolescents and youth, school feeding programmes’ contribution to peace, life skills and citizenship education, etc

  • Research, collect and consolidate lessons learned and best practices from RBC region on WFP school feeding programmes for knowledge management and sharing;
  • Support the dissemination of relevant material and information by drafting newsletter, articles and additional documents and internal capacity building activities that could be shared both internally and externally.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

University degree with experience and training/courses in one or more of the following disciplines: ‘International Affairs, Economics and Social Sciences’

Required experience:

24 Months

Experience remark:

  • Experience in “Food security, Education and Social protection, International Affairs, Economics and Social Sciences’’
  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • Arabic(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge

This is a UN Volunteer assignment and eligible candidates must be 25 years of age or older.
