Selection of staff is made on a competitive basis, and we are committed to promoting diversity and gender balance.

ABOUT WFP

The United Nations World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. The mission of WFP is to help the world achieve Zero Hunger in our lifetimes. Every day, WFP works worldwide to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry and that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and children, can access the nutritious food they need.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the United Nations frontline agency fighting hunger by delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with smallholder farmers, communities, and governments to improve nutrition and build resilience.

In the Eastern African region, the Kenya Country Office and its operational context offers optimal potential for using innovative solutions to improve food assistance programmes and support capacity strengthening. Designing, piloting, implementing, and scaling new ideas lies at the heart of WFP Kenya.

In Kenya, about 2% of food consumed in urban or peri-urban areas is from own production. This makes especially the low-income urban population highly dependent on purchased food and vulnerable to hikes in food prices and disruptions to food distribution chains. H2Grow is a WFP initiative that offers a solution by bringing locally adaptable and affordable hydroponic solutions to communities around the world to enable them grown their own food; this initiative was successfully piloted in Kenya in 2019.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT (cont)

The goal now is to sustainably scale hydroponics for urban food production in Kenya and within other geographies of WFP through strong partners and easily scalable training approaches as integrated within the H2Grow platform, a digital space bringing together the global community of practitioners and technical experts to promote scale and advocate for the technique, and to build a global alliance of partners. Also embedded within the platform is the H2Grow Hydro App which enables remote training and follow-up support for hydroponic farmers, champions, and government extension workers in the project at large scale.

In response to these needs and opportunities, WFP Kenya is opening a position for a Programme Associate (H2Grow Platform Manager), with the key objective to manage the digital H2Grow Platform, including the local and global community of practice, visual design and field testing of trainings, leading the roll-out of the Hydro App in Kenya as well as replicating the roll-out in other countries.
