Overview

Support operationalizing and strengthening food security and nutrition integration.

You have:

  • Demonstrated interest or experience in food systems, climate resilience, or school feeding programmes (up to 12 months).
  • Strong analytical and writing skills.

Mozambique faces a complex set of challenges including high levels of food insecurity, malnutri-tion, and exposure to climate shocks. Under the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Country Strategic Plan (2022–2026) Strategic Outcomes 1 through 4 focus on enhancing food se-curity, nutrition, climate resilience, and government capacities through integrated multisectoral approaches.
This UN Volunteer assignment will support WFP Mozambique’s efforts to operationalize and strengthen the integration of resilience, school feeding, and nutrition within ongoing and emerging programme initiatives.

Under the overall guidance of the Head of Programme and the direct supervision of the Programme Policy officer, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  1. Perform specialized and/or standardised processes and activities within the specific technical area of work supporting alignment with wider programme policies and guidelines.
  2. Provide project management and/or general office support following established targets and WFP’s policies and procedures.
  3. Within the specific area of responsibility, compile data and support analysis and preparation of reports (e.g. food assistance needs, resource utilization, programme status, performance) in order to support operational decision-making.
  4. Perform accurate, timely recording of data within the specific technical area of work (e.g. food security and vulnerability assessments) following corporate standards and guidelines.
  5. Work and exchange information with internal counterparts to support effective collaboration, implementation and monitoring of ongoing project activities.
  6. Support communication and activities with local partners, agencies, NGOs and government institutions.
  7. Act as a point of contact for resolution of general operational queries requesting assistance where necessary.

During the first month of the assignment, the UN Volunteer will work with his/her direct supervisor to finalize an agreed-upon work plan. This plan will include regular meetings with the supervisor to review progress and receive feedback on performance against agreed objectives. The final work plan will be discussed and mutually endorsed by both the UN Volunteer and the supervisor.

Mozambique's climate ranges from tropical and subtropical in the north and central regions to dry, semi-arid steppe and arid desert in the south. The hottest and wettest period occurs between December and February, with average daily temperatures ranging from 22°C to 30°C. The rainy season spans from October to April, while winters, from June to August, are mild with average daily temperatures between 13°C and 24°C. Maputo, the country's capital, serves as both its commercial and cultural hub. Housing in Maputo, which includes apartments and houses, can be rented for $600 to $2,000 per month, depending on the amenities and size. Restaurant meals typically cost between $10 and $15. Food, household commodities and clothing can be found in shops and local markets at reasonable prices. An entry visa is required for all travelers and must be obtained from the Mozambican Embassy prior to travelling. The metical is the local currency and exchange rate stands at USD 1 equivalent to about 64.38 meticais (MZM) as per February 2026. Commercial banks are operational in the country and Visa cards are accepted in very limited hotels. Maputo is categorized as a family duty station offering a variety of different accommodation options. It has a vibrant international community whilst also providing excellent opportunities to work in a national, Mozambican context.
