The implementation of the "Global Programme on Drug Dependence and Treatment" and the "Doha Global Programme" for the prevention and treatment of drugs and the prevention of crime, respectively, are fundamental for Ecuador since they focus on the promotion of peace and security with a human rights approach. They support the implementation of the Constitution of 2008, the National Development Plan 2017-2021, and the 2030 Agenda, mainly the SDG 16. The achievement of SDG Goal 16 is a necessary condition to accomplish the rest of the SDGs, cross-cutting the proper development of UNCAC. UNODC´s 's intervention is designed to contribute to the achievement of the following results: • Governments will be better equipped to comply with and implement their obligations under in-ternational treaties, particularly in efficient judicial cooperation, prevention and measures against illicit drug production, trafficking and abuse, human trafficking and other forms of organized crime, money laundering, corruption and terrorism. • Decision-making will be based on scientific evidence, founded on a more extensive and pre-cise knowledge of illicit drugs, crime and terrorism. • Civil society and public opinion will more strongly support action against illicit drugs and crime, based on a better understanding, knowledge and awareness of global issues related to security and drugs.

Under the direct supervision of the National Coordination Officer in UNODC office in Quito, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

• Support the technical teams in the collection, and analysis of information related to the prevention and treatment of problematic drug consumption and crime • As part of the team, attend meetings with the projects’ counterparts and follow up on the commitments. • Contribute to the mapping of key actors (institutions, authorities, civil society, possible donors, amongst others.) in the framework of the UNODC Pillars (1. drugs, 2. environmental crimes, 3. transnational organized crime, 4. criminal justice, 5. crime prevention and 6. human rights and gender). • Participate in the monthly UNODC’s Programme meetings related to key deliverables follow-up. • Support the consolidation of information from the program area to monitor and evaluate local, regional, and global projects/programmes implemented by UNODC COPER. The volunteer will acquire, among others, knowledge on define SMART indicators, project/programme follow-up and monitoring. • Support the organization of meetings and trainings. The volunteer will be able to access training and specialized courses in crime prevention, drug demand reduction from a human rights approach. • As part of the team, support the preparation of project/programme communication bulletins.

• Professional skills: including specific competencies and reflection on assignment-related abilities; and on-the-job skills such as time management, problem solving, team building; and career preparedness such as interview skills, CV preparation, job searching. • Inter-personal skills: including communication and listening skills; multi-cultural aware-ness and cultural competency; and conflict and stress management. • Volunteering-related skills: including leadership; civic responsibility; and engagement and active participation.

•Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) in International Relations with emphasis on social development and security;
• Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded; • Skills for working in multidisciplinary teams.

In Quito, temperatures range from 7ºC (55ºF) at night to 26ºC (78ºF) at midday for an average of 15ºC (64ºF). It has only two visible seasons: wet and dry. The wet season is called winter and the dry season is called summer. The summer in Quito lasts about four months, from June to September. From October to May it rains frequently. Quito, the capital of Ecuador, is over 2800 meters above sea level. Nevertheless, the climate is very variable.
