Contract

This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

UN Women Kenya in its Strategic Note 2019-2022 in line UNDAF and Kenya vision 2030 in supporting national priorities on Gender Equality and Women’s’ empowerment among other normative frame-works, as well as the follow-up and implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides coherent support to Government, Parliament, Academia, indigenous and women´s organizations, justice system and UN entities, through providing upstream policy and programme advise, promoting a human rights-based approach to achieve sustainable development, improving national systems, sharing of good practices and lessons learned, strengthening normative and operational linkages, and promoting South-South cooperation. In this mandate, the role of UN Women Kenya is key in ensuring that the above are achieved.

UN Women’s Ending Violence Against Women and Girls recognizes that (VAWG) exists in many different forms and persists as a pervasive violation of human rights and a major impediment to achieving gender equality in Kenya. In response to this, UN Women is implementing fully-fledged pro-grammes on Ending Violence against Women and Girls (EVAWG) which are premised on two UN-WOMEN flagship programmes being (i) Prevention and Access to Essential Services to End Violence against Women and Girls and (ii) the safe cities and safe public spaces. The EVAWG work by UN Women seeks to enhance prevention and response of VAWG. In Kenya, approximately 184,718 (2.3%) of young persons are currently living with HIV with 17,700 new infections occurring annually (NACC, 2018). There is also an increase in Gender Based Violence (GBV) in which is becoming an area of concern not only because of its infringement on the rights of the victims but also its impact on achieving the developmental goals related to equal access. Prevention and response to violence against women and girls is thus negatively impacted on by HIV dynamics including the triple threat of infection, teenage pregnancy and gender-based violence.
