Overview

In order to assist member states in Central Asia to implement evidence-based prevention and drug dependence treatment programmes, UNODC – Regional Office for Afghanistan, Central Asia, Iran, and Pakistan (ROCA) supports efforts to reduce the negative health and social consequences of drug use, including HIV. With the health team of UNODC ROCA, UN Volunteers' key activities involve support around the strategies that are aimed at strengthening the capacities of national counterparts in view of the drug demand reduction portfolio, including the HIV prevention. Furthermore, UNV will be specifically connected to youth prevention initiatives in the Central Asia region, focusing on building resilience and life skills to empower young people to make healthy and informed choices. The UN Volunteer will support these activities by contributing to planning, implementation, and monitoring efforts, ensuring alignment with evidence-based practices and regional priorities to address the challenges of drug use and its impact on communities.

UNODC’s regional office has the capacity and necessary facilities to support several volunteers, with a large, well-equipped premises capable of accommodating around 80 employees.

Under strategic guidance of UNODC Regional Representative and the direct supervision of Regional Health Advisor, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

Support the implementation of evidence-based prevention and drug dependence treatment programmes, including initiatives aimed at drug use prevention among youth.

Participate in data collection, research, and analysis related to drug use, the impact of prevention and treatment programmes.

Assist in organizing workshops, trainings, and awareness-raising campaigns

Contribute to the preparation of progress reports, ensuring accurate documentation of activities and achievements.

Facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration across UNODC offices and projects.

Assist in drafting and editing communication materials, including newsletters, reports, and social media posts, to enhance visibility and outreach of UNODC initiatives.

The volunteer will be based in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, which is ‘A’ class in accordance with ICSC “Hardship Classification” Circular as of 01 January 2022. Tashkent is the capital of Uzbekistan with a population of 2.6 million. Tashkent retains a multi-ethnic population, with ethnic Uzbeks as the majority. Tashkent has all required economic and social facilities at a reasonable price, and there are no serious security issues in the city. Tashkent has features of all four seasons of the year, winters are cold, and summers are dry and hot.
