This assignment is in UN Environment 's Corporate Services Division at the Nairobi duty station.

The Enterprise Solutions Section (ESS)of UN Environment’s Corporate Services Division is man-dated to enable efficient and timely UN Environment Programme delivery using ICT standards, solutions and overall business process automation in support of UN Environment’s programme of work. It undertakes a wide range of services, activities and projects. It works closely with clients throughout the project life cycle to tailor the services to their needs ensuring that the solution meets the required objectives from a specification, resource and time perspective.

One of the workstreams within Enterprise Solutions Section is called development and opera-tions (DevOps) Unit. Its overall goal is to develop and maintain systems and services to facili-tate the delivery of UNEPs mandate and automate business process. The UNV will be mainly working under the United Nations Environmental Assembly (UNEA) monitoring platform and other related systems

Under the direct supervision of an Officer in the Section and in close engagement with the UNEP business process owners, the National Specialist Volunteer will be part of a team to design, develop and implement various workflow automation and service request tracking systems. The specific tasks of the National UNV include the following:

Expected Output 1: Strengthen UNEP’s programme and project review capacity for results-based management through consolidating various fragmented organizational data sources into a single in-house data analytics and reporting platform.

Task Description

· Create data design structures, migrate data into systems, set up reports and assist users with front-end use of the system. · Use SQL skills to create user definer functions, complex store procedures, query opti-mization for data analysis. · Design, organize, plan and manage the collection, evaluation, analysis, compilation and dissemination of statistical analyses based on organizational data to Senior Man-agement and UNEP offices. · Design, develop and manage APIs (Application Programming Interfaces). · Develop and implement statistical concepts, definitions and classifications through methodological research. · Contribute to the preparation of monthly reports to be used by the Senior Management Team in the Quarterly Business Review. · Use Python, SQL, and related statistical languages and programs to manipulate com-plex datasets in order to facilitate presentation of this information in a simple and intu-itive format through interactive and impactful visualizations. · Develop operational prototypes to collect, inspect, clean and transform data in ETL (extract, transform, load) processes and load data into staging datasets & ultimately into visualization tools. · Optimize organizational process performance through automating current analysis pro-cess by facilitating the use of advanced analytical tools for data storage and manipulation. · Draft technical documents and relevant reports based on the indicator framework and related research. Document the development procedure at every stage. · Implement best practices in data management to ensure the integrity of the data, the quality of data processes and deliver analysed data to internal divisions. · Perform ad-hoc structured data analysis. · Work closely with Divisions and Regional Offices to aid with data alignment of their projects in the system. · Identify and recommend potential improvements to the database structure or indexing methods to improve performance. · Be responsible for data collection processes and data management activities, including data encoding, storing, processing and analysis. Expected Output 3: Business Systems Development.

· Plan, design, develop, implement and maintain customized application software sys-tems. · Undertake related software development. · Maintain and update internal databases. · Undertake routine administration, operation and monitoring of systems. · Undertake the diagnosis and resolution of any hardware, software, or connectivity prob-lem with minimum delay.

· Keep current with and share data analytics, statistical and visualization leading prac-tices. · Keep abreast of developments in technology both in the UN and in the industry in gen-eral.

Results/Expected Outputs

· UNEP’s programme and project review capacity for results-based management is strengthened through consolidating various fragmented organizational data sources into a single in-house data analytics and reporting platform. · Divisions are assisted with data gathering , governance and injection into the unified sys-tem

· Applications and tools are developed to support the automation and reporting of result management framework. · Co-workers are training on the tools and systems provided.

Skills: · High level of proficiency in at least four of the following: Jira, Confluence, PHP, Python, JavaScript, MySQL databases, Power Apps, Teams, and SharePoint Online. · Experience working in teams, including coordination of junior members, and engaging with clients. Working with multicultural teams would be an advantage. · Experience in developing workflow automation and service request tracking solutions would be an advantage.

Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than

26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
