This is a UNV National Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Youth contracts.

One of the core functions of UNEP is to promote the progressive development of environmental law, in line with its original mandate and its current programme of work.

The Law Division leads the development and implementation of the UNEP Environmental Governance subprogramme, which includes the promotion of streamlined and coherent environmental governance at the international level, the promotion of progressive development and implementation of environmental law, support to international environmental agreements (known as multilateral environmental agreements – MEAs), and promotion of mainstreaming of environmental objectives in the development sector

Under the direct supervision of Head of Unit, Programme Delivery and Management Unit, the National UN Youth Volunteer will: • Contribute to effective outreach and communication for the Law Division, the Communications Division, and other offices within UNEP that work on Environmental Governance, by providing written and other inputs for the various outreach materials, including the website, pamphlets, exhibitions and posters if relevant; • Write and disseminate quarterly and annual reports to both internal and external stakeholders on the progress of the Law Division’s work in enhancing environmental governance; • Promote content such as publications, events and campaigns on social media channels, emails and other available official and non-official outreach venues; • Update, maintain and gather contacts for the Law Division’s mailing list; • Update and maintain content on the Environmental Governance Sub-programme’s website including stories, videos, banner pictures and publications/information materials, with guidance from the Head of Unit and project managers; • Contribute to knowledge management in UNEP by uploading publications, meeting documents and other relevant information materials on the organization’s repository; • Develop monthly Environmental Governance related stories and share with relevant internal and external stakeholders; • Design, redesign and update communication and outreach materials for the Division, such as brochures, publications, fact-sheets and banners using readily available tools such as Adobe InDesign; • Contribute to the organization of and participate in relevant meetings, including global meetings such as the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) and develop content such as stories and picture database; • Organize and coordinate exhibition of Law Division’s products and services during global meetings such as United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA); • Support social media monitoring and analysis of Law Division content; • Create and analyze surveys for the Law Division upon requests from project managers; • Manages updates and further develops internal databases, update website, generates a variety of standard and non-standard statistical and other reports from various databases. • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities: • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.
• Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighboring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
