UN Women Liberia Country Office contributes to its global corporate mandate to make the vision of the sustainable Development Goals a reality for women and girls and stands behind women’s equal participation in all aspects of life. Its main objective is to promote women’s human rights and gender equality which are key in sustaining and furthering achievements in stability and development. In this regard, its programming in the Liberia Country Office is connected to four corporate priority areas: (1) women’s leadership and political participation; (2) enhancing women’s economic empowerment; (3) engaging women in all aspects of peace and security processes; and (4) advancing women’s rights to live free from violence. UN Women also coordinates and promotes the UN system’s joint work in advancing gender equality.

In line with its mandate, UN Women works to promote diverse and inclusive approaches to development, including ensuring the participation of young women, women living with disabilities, rural women and other categories of marginalized women and girls in the planning and implementation of its programmes.

As a learning Organisation, UN Women also invests in codifying lessons learned and good practices, and sharing these with development partners and stakeholders to improve the quality of interventions aimed at empowerment of women and girls.

• The International Youth Volunteer will work under the supervision of the UN Women thematic programme Lead to support the Women, Peace, and Security Programs and will also provide support to the UN Women Country Representative on partnership and representational activities.
• Support to the Women, Peace and Security Programs
• Support research and analysis to guide policy advocacy and programming to promote women’s participation in peace and security settings in Liberia • Provide support to the implementation of the National Action Plan on Women Peace and Security • Maintain an ongoing watching-brief on national policy developments related to women peace and security and identify strategic policy entry points for UN Women • Support capacity building of partners implementing initiatives on Women, Peace and Security • Provide technical inputs to strengthen programme documents, concept notes, project proposals and strategic documents • Support effective application of results-based management principles and tools for programming related to women’s role in peace and security in Liberia • Support implementation of donor reporting obligations and knowledge codification • Support to the Office of the Country Representative • Support partnership and outreach activities undertaken by the Country Representative with respect to normative campaigns, commemoration of international days, and outreach to non-traditional partners • Support outreach efforts of the Country Representative to support partnership-building and commitments to expand work on women peace and security and youth peace and security amongst other thematic areas and prepare briefing notes and talking points for the Country Representative as required.

• Experience in gender and women peace and security issues; additional years of experience will be an advantage

Liberia, Africa's oldest Republic, is located at the western edge of the continent, on the Atlantic coast between Sierra Leone and Côte d'Ivoire. The population of Liberia is approximately 4.5 million and contains about 16 different ethnic groups. A large percentage of Liberia’s population live in the capital. The Specialist will be based in Monrovia the capital city of Liberia. The climate features a wet season and a dry season, but precipitation is seen even during the dry season. Temperatures remain constant throughout the year averaging around 26.4 °C (79.5 °F). Some visitors may feel cold during the day and evenings in the rainy season; also, most rooms are air conditioned, so it is suggested that appropriate clothing (light sweater or jacket) be brought along.

The country is generally safer, except for petty crimes especially in the cities. It is mandatory to complete the United Nations Security course BSAFE. The current UN security level for Liberia is level 2. Upon arrival in the country, all UN staff receive a security briefing from UN Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS). Security recommendations from UNDSS must be followed by all UN Staff and UN Volunteers during their assignments in Liberia.

In Monrovia, apartment-type accommodation can be found in areas such as Mamba Point and Sinkor. These are of various standards and usually come furnished with water and electricity and security guards, in compliance with UN security requirements. Prices are negotiable. The UNV Field Unit Liberia connects arriving volunteers to furnished MORSS compliant property owners. The Field Unit supports incoming volunteers to identify suitable accommodation prior to arrival. There are hotels and guesthouses in various county capitals that are comfortable and furnished with facilities such as wi-fi, electricity, and security. A gym is available at the One UN House for all categories of staff based on the presentation of the UN ID Card and there are also private gyms nearby.

The US dollar is widely used and can be exchanged with the Liberian dollar (exchange rate as of February 2023: 1 US$ = 150 Liberian dollar). Credit cards and traveller’s checks are not commonly accepted but there are several cash machines/ATMs in Liberia that take visa cards.
