Strategic Partnerships Pillar within the External Relations Unit

At the regional office, the Strategic Partnerships Pillar is one of the three functional pillars of the External Relations unit (covering regional Partnerships & RM, Advocacy and Communications). The Strategic Partnerships Pillar focuses on building partnerships with bilateral partners as well as private sector entities, non-profit organizations, and the media. In addition, the Strategic Partnerships team supports country offices with their private sector fundraising and engagement efforts and helps build their resource mobilization capacity.

Duties and Responsibilities

Scope of Work

Under the direct supervision of the Regional Head of External Relations the Private Sector Partnerships Development Consultant will provide technical support to the development and management of UN Women’s regional strategic partnerships and relationships, including with the private sector, innovative financing partners, IFIs, and select government partners. The Consultant’s portfolio will have a particular focus on growing ROAP’s engagement with new private sector partners.

He/she will also contribute to the continuous quality improvement and implementation of the Regional Partnerships and Resource Mobilization strategy. The consultant will provide direct technical advice and support to enhance capacity in the Regional Office (RO) and the region’s Country Offices (CO), Non-resident Agencies, and Multi-Country Office (MCO) to engage with the private sector and new financing actors, as specified under the Resource Mobilization Strategy and Action Plan 2022 – 2025, including but not limited, to businesses, corporate and family foundations, IFIs, High-Net-Worth Individuals, National Committees, Individual Giving, and government partners.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Works with Regional Office units, Country/Multi-country Offices, and Non-resident Agencies to manage the full cycle of building new partnerships with the private sector: Supports UN Women offices on their one-to-one prospecting and negotiating of new business and innovative partnerships. Responsibility for driving a regional pipeline of prospects that convert into six and seven figure US$ partners in priority countries and/or the regional office.
  • Contributes to and coordinates elements necessary to build the capacity and skills in new high-value partnership development across UN Women offices in Asia and the Pacific
  • Contributes to the development of content and materials on how to secure partnerships with corporates via webinars, training sessions, and other resources. Identifies and shares best practices and case studies within the Regional RM and Partnerships Community of Practice.
  • First point of contact for new partnership development, as specified under the Resource Mobilization Strategy and Action Plan 2022 – 2025, across the UN Women network in Asia and the Pacific and with relevant UN Women Headquarters department (e.g. Multistakeholder Partnerships and Advisory Services) to guide and support Country Offices and Non-resident Agencies on new partnership development including due diligence processes in coordination with the MPAS Due Diligence Helpdesk.

Monthly Status Report provided. This report can include updates on the progress in any of the following areas of work:

• Robust regional pipeline of prospects and prospect intelligence developed

Research and document recommended entry points and scope range of partnership opportunities with prospects;

• Template corporate pitches developed

Custom pitches developed for prospective partners;

• Progress update on meetings secured with potential corporate/innovative financing partners and IFIs;

• Conduct corporate mapping and analysis of Regional and CO priorities and opportunities, ensuring it is relevant and up to date (including innovative financing partners and IFIs);

• Progress update on the implementation of ROAP’s plans and initiatives for corporate engagement and prospect management;

• Meeting summaries from discussions with the Innovative Financing Task Force;

• Updates on relationship management with key regional bilateral partner; and

• Capacity building and knowledge management for colleagues in the region on engagement with private sector partners/innovative financing actors.

Supervision

The consultant will work under the direct supervision of the Regional Head of External Relations. In the event, that the consultant needs to travel during the consultancy for assignment-related purposes, UN Women will bear the costs of requested travel expenses.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in economics, business management, social sciences, public administration, international relations, communications, or a related field is required.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

    Experience

  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional work experience in fundraising with the private sector, business development, marketing and sponsorship;

  • Proven experience of identifying, developing and securing a new business pipeline;
  • Experience brokering innovative partnerships and mobilizing resources from corporations in an international organization is highly desirable;
  • Experience working in or with developing countries is an advantage;
  • Good command of Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) are required;
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment is desirable;
  • Experience with the UN system is an asset.

    Language and pitch deck/proposal writing skills requirement:

  • Proficiency in English is required.

  • Working knowledge of another UN language is desirable.

Contract period and work location

This is a 12-month contract commencing on 1 August 2023 and ending on 31 July 2024. The International Consultant will be home-based and working remotely for the UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific.

Payments for this consultancy will be based on the achievement of each deliverable and certification that each has been satisfactorily completed. Payments will not be based on the number of days worked but on the completion of each stated deliverable within the indicated timeframes.
