Youth unemployment remains one of Kenya’s most pressing development challenges, driven by rapid population growth, changing labor market dynamics, and persistent skills mismatches. In response, UNDP Kenya is developing the NextGen Programme, an integrated initiative aimed at addressing youth unemployment through market-relevant skills development, private sector engagement, and innovative partnerships. The NextGen Programme seeks to strengthen linkages between youth, employers, private sector actors, and foundations to ensure that young people are equipped with skills aligned to current and future labor market needs. As UNDP Kenya prepares to roll out this programme, there is a need for targeted support in engaging the private sector, analyzing skills gaps in the market, and mapping potential partners. To support this effort, UNDP Kenya is offering a two-week online volunteering assignment focused on private sector engagement, labor market and skills gap analysis, and the development of a preliminary partner roster to inform the NextGen Programme design and implementation.

Under the supervision of the NextGen Programme Team, the online volunteer will undertake the following tasks: a) Private Sector Engagement • Conduct desk research on private sector engagement models relevant to youth employment and skills development. • Identify key private sector trends, priority industries, and emerging sectors with high youth employment potential. • Support the development of engagement approaches for private sector participation in the NextGen Programme. b) Market and Skills Gap Analysis • Review existing reports, labor market studies, and skills assessments related to youth employment in Kenya. • Identify key skills gaps between youth competencies and private sector labor market demands. • Summarize priority technical, digital, soft, and green skills relevant to current and future job markets. c) Partner Mapping and Roster Development • Identify and map potential private sector partners, foundations, and corporate entities aligned with youth employment, skills development, and inclusive growth. • Develop a preliminary roster/database of organizations UNDP Kenya can engage as the NextGen Programme is rolled out. • Categorize partners by sector, interest area, and potential contribution (e.g., funding, mentorship, training, job placements). IV. Expected Outputs and Deliverables By the end of the two-week engagement, the online volunteer is expected to deliver: 1. A brief market and skills gap analysis summary highlighting priority skills gaps relevant to youth employment in Kenya. 2. A mapped roster of private sector actors and foundations, including contact details and engagement relevance. 3. A short briefing note outlining recommendations for private sector engagement under the NextGen Programme.
