Contract
This is a UNV International Youth contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Youth contracts.
The UNV will work as part of the UNRCO team and directly contribute to the implementation of the UNSDCF. She/He will work closely with the Partnership and Development Finance Officer and the Economist and collaborate with relevant UN Agencies in Tajikistan. It is envisaged that the Private Sector Development Officer will map private sector activities and the UN’s engagement with them. Based on this assessment, the Private Sector Development Officer will contribute to developing strategic interventions with the aim of increasing awareness among private sector actors and opportunities for them to contribute more towards green growth. One of the key deliverables of this assignment is to nurture the UN’s relationship with private sector representative organizations in Tajikistan, such as the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the National Association of Small and Medium Businesses, and engagement of the private sector with the UN Global Compact. Besides that, the Private Sector Development Officer will also closely liaise with the Ministry of Economic Development & Trade, the Ministry of Industry and Innovation, and the State Committee on Investments and State Property Management. She/He will also work closely with the International Financial Institutions (IFI) to ensure complementarities with their work on public-private partnership (PPP) and opportunities for collaboration.
Under the overall supervision of the Head of RCO with day-to-day supervision of the Partnership and Finance Officer and the Economist, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Map the private sector in Tajikistan using existing research and data; this should in-clude the private sector’s footprint and contribution to the national economy, the sus-tainable development agenda, and key bottlenecks it faces to increase investments in the green economy. o [Deliverables: Short analytical paper]
• Compile lessons learned and best practices in promoting private sector engagement in delivering greater social impact. Explore opportunities to set up a network of the UN Global Compact in Tajikistan. In this regard, assess interest among private companies, organize briefing sessions, and collate and share lessons from Global Compact net-works in neighbouring countries. o [Deliverables: Briefing note on lessons & the way forward]
• Assess the pipeline of PPP projects; identify and shortlist initiatives with a potential of high impact on progressing the SDGs in the country with a focus on the green econo-my. In carrying out this task, liaise with the PPP Center, UNECE, UNDP, IFIs, etc., to ensure proper coordination, avoiding duplication, and building on the previous work. o [Deliverables: Table of high-impact projects]
• Organize awareness-raising and knowledge management activities to help the private sector players to identify opportunities for their engagement in the green economy and financing, corporate social responsibility, and PPPs. Organize events to recognize the contribution of the private sector towards sustainable development. o [Deliverables: Two briefing sessions & SDGs awards event]
• Participate in relevant private sector forums to keep track of ongoing developments; continuously scan the private sector landscape to identify opportunities for new UN programmes and policy support in private sector development. o [Deliverables: Quarterly Updates]
• Carry out research and analysis on selected topical issues and contribute to further enhancing the knowledge-sharing capability of the UNRCO; keep the technical focal points in UNRCO informed; undertake other tasks as directed by the supervisor. o [Deliverables: Two analytical papers]

(Candidates with 0 to 3 years of experience can be considered). • Demonstrated experience financing businesses and/or business development plans is desirable. • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience in another culture (i.e., studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly desirable. • Previous experience conducting socioeconomic research and excellent writing skills is required. • Previous experience working with representatives of the private sector, e.g., chamber of commerce, is highly desirable.
Dushanbe is designed as the UN family duty station. Reasonable accommodation is available, including apartments and houses. The crime rate is very low. Public transport in Dushanbe includes buses and taxis. There are several local supermarkets. There are two to three weekly flights connecting to regional hubs such as Dubai and Istanbul. Also, there are regular flights to several cities in Russia.
