Founded in 1972 following the landmark UN Conference on the Human Environment, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading environmental authority in the United Nations system. UNEP's mandate is to find solutions to the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste. The mission of UNEP is to inspire, inform, and enable nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.
UNEP Tanzania Office is part of the Africa office, headed by the Regional Director and Representative. The architecture of the UNEP Office in Tanzania is inclined to a representational role, coordination and integration of UNEP’s inputs and commitments to the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) and liaison with the host government.
The goal of this assignment is to prepare a comprehensive report on the current status of the implementation of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) in Tanzania. This includes assessing recent developments, evaluating the effectiveness of MEA-related policies and actions, and identifying opportunities for enhancing Tanzania’s engagement with international environmental agreements.
• Review Key MEAs: Identify and review the Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) that Tanzania is a party to, such as the Paris Agreement, CBD, UNCCD, and Stockholm Convention, to understand their objectives and commitments. • Investigate Recent Developments: Research and document recent updates, initiatives, and policy changes related to the implementation of these MEAs in Tanzania, including progress reports and new measures. • Assess Implementation Effectiveness: Evaluate the effectiveness of Tanzania’s current policies and actions in meeting the commitments of these MEAs, focusing on their impact, successes, and challenges. • Identify Areas for Improvement: Based on the effectiveness assessment, identify gaps and opportunities for enhancing the implementation of MEAs in Tanzania, including potential policy adjustments and new strategies. • Prepare a Comprehensive Report: Develop a detailed report summarizing the MEAs Tanzania is involved in, recent implementation updates, effectiveness evaluations, and actionable recommendations for improving MEA implementation efforts.
