Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of sustainable development, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Under the direct supervision of the Industry and Economy Division’s (IED) Front Office (UN Coordination Officer and Monitoring & Evaluation Specialist), and with overall guidance by the UNEP IED Deputy Director, the intern will assist in developing and updating various information and monitoring and evaluation tools (specific responsibilities mentioned below). The intern must have mother-tongue or equivalent ability in English and ideally a good command in French. Daily responsibilities may vary depending on the individual’s background as well as the internship period. Duties will include, inter alia: Coordinate and assign to relevant teams requests emanating from the Correspondence Tracking System (CTS) team, supporting teams in drafting correspondence-related products and performing quality control on formatting and editing. Support the organization of meetings and events, including the yearly IED retreat. Support the compilation of inputs into briefing notes, and format/edit according to the established protocols. Support the Division’s Front Office in developing/finalizing Powerpoint presentations. Provide support to the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer and UN Coordination Officer in the management/update of existing databases and tracking tools, including UNEA Resolutions IED tracking tool. Regularly update the UNEP IED website/intranet and support the updating of entrance screens. Act as focal point for the organization of briefing sessions for the Industry and Economy Division’s interns and act as liaison focal point between IED interns and senior management, through the Front Office.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Final year undergraduate or master's degree student in business administration, communications, international relations, environmental affairs, development studies. The intern must be able to show proof of enrolment or of graduation date if selected for this position. Candidates for the UN Internship Programme are required to cover the cost of travel including visa, accommodation, health insurance and other living expenses for the duration of the internship.
