Duties and Responsibilities
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region's economic and social development. Its mission includes the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise, and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities. Please visit our website at www.eclac.org for further information. The internship in CELADE-Population División of ECLAC in Santiago (Chile) will last 2 months. Candidates may be selected throughout the posting period, on an "as-needed" basis. Under the supervision or overall guidance of Population Affairs Officer, the intern is expected: a) To search, collect, and organize information and reference materials on population issues, specially as it relates to demographic analysis, population aging, international migration and commuting b) To generate and analyze demographic and population and development indicators and prepares brief reports based on the indicators c) Participation in seminars and workshops of the division d) To support the organization and servicing of meetings in the areas covered by the Division, workshops of divisional projects and inter-governmental conferences. e) To carry out other tasks as required by the Division.
Qualifications/special skills
The basic education required is a HS degreed. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). 1. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. 2. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. 3. Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, REDATAM, EXCEL, R and standar statistical packages like SPPS and STATA. 4. Fluency in spoken and written in English and Spanish. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.
