You have:

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.

  • Applicants must cover the cost of travel including visa, accommodation, health insurance and other living expenses for the duration of the internship.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region's economic and social development. Its mission includes the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise, and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities. The internship in CELADE-Population División of ECLAC in Santiago (Chile) will last 3 months (renewable till 3 months depending on the needs of the Office. Candidates may be selected throughout the posting period, on an "as-needed" basis. Under the supervision or overall guidance of Population Affairs Officer, the intern is expected: a) To search, collect, and organize information and reference materials on population issues with an ethno-racial perspective. b) To process census microdata from selected Latin American countries, disaggregated by ethno-racial and territorial levels (national, subnational, and urban-rural residence), the software by default is Redatam. c) To prepare tables, charts, and thematic maps related to the territorial distribution of ethnic groups. d) To make preliminary analysis of the sociodemographic information. e) To support the organization and servicing of meetings in the areas covered by the Division, workshops of divisional projects and inter-governmental conferences. f) To carry out other tasks as required by the Division.

Qualifications/special skills

The basic education required is HS Diploma. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). 1 Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. 2 Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent) 3 Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and REDATAM 1 Candidates for the UN Internship Programme are required to cover the cost of travel including visa, accommodation, health insurance and other living expenses for the duration of the internship. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
