Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

  • University studies in one of the following disciplines: gender, statistics, social sciences, public policies, social work, law, or other relevant subjects is required.
  • Meet one of the following:
  1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  3. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation; or
  4. Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.

The Political Analysis and Programme Development Unit (PAPDU) has five regional desks that serve as a bridge between the field and HQ and facilitate effective flow of information on Political Analysis, Programmatic oversight and accountability, Strategic Partnerships, UN Development System Reform reform. ,Programme Development, Resource Mobilization and Results Management.

PAPDU is dedicated to strengthening programme-policy coherence, political representation, and to ensuring programmatic growth. PAPDU plays a critical role in bridging field level initiatives to UN Women Headquarters, and is a key driver for cross-divisional, cross-regional coordination to inform strategic and programme-policy deliberations, strengthening sharing of political insights, knowledge, and programmatic growth at field and HQ level.

To ensure that UN Women programmes are strategic and rooted in a common vision as per the SDG framework, PAPDU focuses on knowledge management, programme-policy coherence, South-South and Triangular Cooperation, cross-fertilization and sharing of knowledge and innovative approaches, relationship and partnership management and communication of results to ensure programmatic growth. Our work is informed by a policy and political analysis function which bridges UN Women's global level normative role and policy development with field level engagements and impacts.

Duties and Responsibilities

UN Women is preparing country fact sheets, and under the direct supervision and guidance of the Chief of PAPDU , the intern will assist the work of Political analysis and programme development.

Responsibilities:

Support to develop user friendly and comprehensive gender equality country fact sheets for countries in the Global South (Research Oriented)

  • Conduct a desk review of gender equality data and information according to an agreed template.
  • Review reports and compile, in the master files of the database, information on measures undertaken by Member States in a range of aspects to advance gender equality in the country context and inter-governmental bodies.
  • Upload collected data and measures on the website content management system.

  • Increase knowledge in women’s rights, gender equality and ending violence against women and girls;
  • Increase knowledge of work of inert-governmental bodies such as the General Assembly, the Human Rights Council and the ECOSOC.

Required Skills and Experience

  • University studies in one of the following disciplines: gender, statistics, social sciences, public policies, social work, law, or other relevant subjects is required.
