Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Office of Political Affairs (OPA) of the United Nations Mission in Kosovo. The incumbent reports to the Chief of OPA.
Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Chief, Office of Political Affairs/UNMIK, the Political Affairs Officer:
•analyses political trends and developments affecting the situation in Kosovo; Pristina's relations with Belgrade; and the work of UNMIK; •prepares briefing notes and talking points for UNMIK and UN/HQ senior leadership; •contributes to the coordination of inputs in preparation of the Secretary-General's reports to the Security Council and the submission of political updates, analyses, and briefing packages to UNMIK leadership and UN/HQ. Drafts routine correspondence addressed to UN/HQ or local authorities, as appropriate; •as requested, provides guidance and advice on assigned issues to UNMIK leadership; •develops and maintains relations with government, civil society, and international community representatives at the working level, and advises them on issues and policies of mutual concern; •shows team spirit and contributes to all aspects of the work of the UNMIK Office of Political Affairs; •assists in planning, coordinating and supporting programmes, projects and activities requiring mission and/or interagency involvement and participation. Represents the team at round tables, seminars and conferences; •supports his/her supervisor in the formulation of the programme of work, budget and medium-term plans of the unit by participating in meetings, and compiling or researching issues related to the mission; •performs other related duties as required.

Education Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Political Science, International Relations, International Law, Development Studies, or a related field. A first level university degree with a combination of two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience A minimum of five (05) years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related field is required. Extensive experience in political outreach, facilitation, analysis, advice and reporting is required. Experience working in the Balkans for the UN or other international organization or nongovernmental organization is desirable.
Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of Albanian or Serbo-Croatian is desirable.
Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
Special Notice - This position is temporarily available until 30 June 2021, with possible extension. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.
