This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

This UNV will be based in Bangkok working with this Office and the United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide (OSAPG).

The UNV will act as a liaison for the OSAPG to strengthen its engagement and cooperation at the regional level with key stakeholders, in particular the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, on the mandate of the OSAPG on prevention of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, as well as countering and addressing hate speech in line with the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech.

  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to the prevention of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity in the region, in particular related to the prevention of incitement to violence and countering and addressing hate speech.
  • Supports capacity building and technical assistance, including coordinating training seminars, capacity building workshops and technical assistance programs related to the prevention of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity as well as countering and addressing hate speech with relevant stakeholders in the region.
  • Serves as liaison for the OSAPG with ASEAN and works with relevant stakeholders in ASEAN and other relevant entities on common policy and initiatives related to the prevention of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity as well as countering and addressing hate speech.
  • Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters, in particular with sub regional organizations in the region.
  • Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, government and non-governmental organizations related to the mandate of OSAPG.
  • Supports initiative to support education curricula and learning material on prevention of genocide and countering and addressing hate speech in the region.
  • Support outreach related to the prevention of genocide and countering and addressing hate speech in the region.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

• Experience in prevention of genocide, conflict prevention, political affairs, human rights or related field; • Experience working in the UN or other international or regional organization; • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills; • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing; • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of prevention of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity as well as countering and addressing hate speech, ability to incorporate gender perspectives in work; • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel; • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, among others), email, and internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment; • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials.

Benefits and Entitlements: The purpose of the allowances and entitlements paid to UN Volunteers is to enable UN Volunteers to sustain a secure standard of living at the duty stations in line with United Nations standards without incurring personal costs. The allowances are in no way to be understood as compensation, reward, or salary in exchange for the UN Volunteer’s service. Contingent on specific eligibility criteria, location of the volunteer assignment and contractual type and category, the payment of allowances will begin from the date of Commencement of Service.

Monthly living Allowance (per month) is around 47,500 Thai Baht Entry Lump Sum (one-time payment) USD 400 Exit Allowance (for each month served paid on completion of assignment) THB 3958.92 Medical and Life Insurance Coverage

Leave entitlements:

Annual leave: 2.5 days accrued per calendar month Certified sick leave: 30 days Uncertified Sick Leave: 7 days Learning leave: 10 working days per consecutive 12 months Maternity Leave: 16 weeks Paternity Leave: 10 days
