Contract

This is a P-4 contract. This kind of contract is known as Professional and Director staff. It is normally internationally recruited only. It's a staff contract. It usually requires 7 years of experience, depending on education.

The salary for this job should be between 159,743 USD and 205,956 USD.

Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Strategic Planning and Monitoring Unit (SPMU), the Executive Office of the Secretary-General (EOSG). The incumbent reports to the Director of SPMU.

EOSG, under the guidance of the Secretary-General (SG), the incumbent will work as a team pursuing in a cohesive and coherent manner, the SG's vision, priorities and policies – including the recommendations outlined in Our Common Agenda. It seeks alignment of the United Nations family with the SG's vision, priorities and policies. It is guided by the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence and integrity and of achieving gender and regional balance among staff.

All EOSG units support the EOSG senior officials, as appropriate, depending on the tasks at hand, regardless of which senior official they formally report to, and work together through a matrix team approach, as necessary, to ensure EOSG leads by example on integration and cross-pillar work.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Reviews and supports coordination and decision-making on priority issues outlined in Our Common Agenda in the Executive Committee, Deputies Committee, and Senior Management Group.
  • Reviews and supports the tracking and implementation of decisions on management priorities, including those related to Our Common Agenda.
  • Supports and undertakes all related day-to-day management of the Executive Committee Secretariat.
  • Organizes, prepares and supports high-level meetings, including on issues outlined in Our Common Agenda in coordination with UN and non-UN counterparts, and including dissemination of background documents, and preparation of outcome timely documents.
  • Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press.
  • Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of assignment and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in missions and elsewhere in the Secretariat.
  • Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters.
  • Prepares meetings of the Secretary-General (SG)/Deputy Secretary-General (DSG)/Chef de Cabinet (CDC)/ Under-Secretary-General (USG) with officials from countries under the Organization's purview.
  • Acts as focal point for collection and analysis of information on legislative bodies i.e. Executive Committee, Deputies Committee, and Senior Management Group.
  • Arranges and participates in Executive Committee, Deputies Committee, and Senior Management Group diverse fora.
  • Provides up-to-date information to senior management regarding substantive issues pertaining to Executive Committee, Deputies Committee, and Senior Management Group.
  • Participates in conferences, seminars and academic fora related to his/her assigned area of expertise.
  • Carries out, in consultation with the Chief of the Unit, administrative functions relating to the planning of Executive Committee, Deputies Committee, and Senior Management Group.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

    Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

    Work Experience A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, humanitarian affairs, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area, is required.

    Experience in supporting UN headquarters coordination processes is required.

    Experience in providing direct coordination support to senior management is desirable.

    Experience in coordinating emergency and crisis situations is desirable.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required and knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
