Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in Kathmandu, at the United Nations Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Asia and the Pacific (UNRCPD), which is part of the Regional Disarmament Branch of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs. The incumbent will report to the Director of UNRCPD.

Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Director of the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (UNRCPD), the incumbent will be responsible for assisting in providing projects/programmes support and implementation oversight and will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Participates in conceiving and development of substantive projects related to peace, security and disarmament in Asia and the Pacific; monitor project activities/deliverables and associated expenditures and conduct evaluations to compile cumulative lessons learned; draft project narrative/financial reports in a timely manner.

  • Provides support for resource mobilization and assist with outreach efforts by developing resource mobilization strategies and guidelines, elaborating and maintaining a donors relations management tool; liaising with Governments, donors, Asia and the Pacific regional organizations, UN agencies, civil society, research institutions and other partners on issues of peace, security and disarmament.

  • Participates in the planning and organization of regional workshops, seminars and other meetings and representing UNRCPD as required in meetings or participating missions.

  • Assists the Director in operational and management matters, including programme budget, workplan, and the management/supervision of personnel, financial, logistical and administrative matters of the Regional Centre.

  • Carries out research and analysis on regional disarmament and non-proliferation issues; prepare draft background papers, briefing notes and talking points; and perform other duties as required.

Allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work. Foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning. Monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary. Uses time efficiently.

Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations or related area. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree in the specified fields of studies.

Work Experience Five years of progressively responsible experience at the international and/or national level in the fields of disarmament, peace and/or multilateral diplomacy is required.

Experience in United Nations practices and procedures in the field of disarmament and international security is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required; Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
