Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Office of Political Affairs of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the Office of Political Affairs.

Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Chief of the Office of Political Affairs, the Political Affairs Officer:

  • analyses political trends and developments affecting the situation in Kosovo; Pristina's relations with Belgrade; and the implementation of UNMIK’s mandate;
  • prepares briefing notes, code cables, and talking points for UNMIK and UN/HQ senior leadership.
  • contributes to the coordination of inputs for the Secretary-General's reports to the Security Council and the submission of political updates, analyses, and briefing packages to UNMIK leadership and UN/HQ; drafts correspondence addressed to UN/HQ or local authorities, as appropriate.
  • as requested, provides advice on assigned issues to the UNMIK leadership.
  • develops and maintains relations with government, civil society, and international community representatives on issues and policies of mutual concern.
  • assists in planning, coordinating and supporting programmes, projects and activities requiring mission and/or interagency involvement and participation; represents the team at round tables, seminars and conferences.
  • supports his/her supervisor in the formulation of the programme of work, budget and medium-term plans of the unit; conducts research on political trends and issues in Kosovo and the region.
  • contributes to other aspects of the work of the Office and performs other duties as required.

Education Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Political Science, International Relations, International Law, Development Studies, or a related field. A first level university degree with a combination of two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Professional training in the areas of planning, monitoring and evaluation, facilitation and/or coordination is an asset.

Work Experience A minimum of five (05) years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related field is required.

Experience in political outreach, facilitation, analysis, advice and reporting is required.

Experience in political analysis and reporting in the Western Balkan region is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of Albanian or Serbo-Croatian is desirable.
