Duties and Responsibilities

The internship is designed to be in-person for a period of six (6) months. The envisioned start date is Monday 29 January 2024. The internship is UNPAID and travel costs, travel arrangements (including visas) and living accommodations are the responsibility of the intern. The candidate may be requested to work remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises.

This internship is in the Climate, Peace and Security Team within the Policy and Mediation Division (PMD) of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA). The incumbent will report to the relevant supervisor.

As part of the Climate, Peace and Security Team, the intern will support research and outreach activities, including the review and production of documents and publications on climate change, peace and security.

This internship can be performed either full-time (35h/week) or part-time (20h/week) depending on the preference of the successful candidate.

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); c) Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the Internship Programme but should: • Be computer literate in standard software applications; • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages

For this internship, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat).

For internships outside the United States, interns who are not citizens of the country, permanent residents, or not currently in the country's nonimmigrant visa status will be required to obtain a valid visa and work permit, allowing them to undertake the internship. The United Nations must ensure all applicants for an internship, regardless of citizenship or national origin, are authorized to work from the country where the internship will be undertaken either remotely, hybrid or on the UN-premise duty station. Before resuming an internship, the applicant must submit proof of visa and/or work authorization.

Applicants who have previously served six months, in total, as an intern in one or more UN Common Systems cannot be engaged as an intern.
