Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (UNRCPD) is the Asia-Pacific Regional Office of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs and is located in Kathmandu, Nepal. The Regional Centre assists 43 UN Member States in Asia and the Pacific in achieving their peace, security and disarmament goals, through provision of substantive support, coordination of activities at sub-regional, regional and international levels, and information sharing on global and regional activities. According to its mandate, UNRCPD provides States of the region, upon their request, aid and support for implementation of international agreements aimed preventing and combating illegal flows of conventional arms, promoting dialogue and confidence-building on global and regional issues related to arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation, addressing challenges to peace and security through engaging women and youth and promoting peace and disarmament education. In this regard, the intern will provide support in one or more of UNRCPD's key programmatic areas: 1. Weapons of Mass Destruction 2. Conventional Arms and Ammunition 3. Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Education 4. Cross Cutting Issues - Gender, Youth, Emerging Technologies Security Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned office, as well as the internship period. Interns shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to: • Assistance in drafting and preparing official documents • Document, legal and internet research • Assistance during conferences and meetings • Working on web-presentation This internship is unpaid and is designed to be full-time and in-person at the Kathmandu duty station. The manager may allow part-time, remote or hybrid internships at the request of the successful candidate. The Intern, under the supervision of a primary supervisor, shall be assigned to the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (UNRCPD) and must adhere to the established official working hours five days per week with one hour for lunch break.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). APPLICANTS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO HAVE PROFESSIONAL WORK EXPERIENCE FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE PROGRAMME.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
