Background

UNDP is the knowledge frontier organization for sustainable development in the UN Development System and serves as the integrator for collective action to realize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNDP’s policy work carried out at HQ, Regional and Country Office levels, forms a contiguous spectrum of deep local knowledge to cutting-edge global perspectives and advocacy. In this context, UNDP invests in the Global Policy Network (GPN), a network of field-based and global technical expertise across a wide range of knowledge domains and in support of the signature solutions and organizational capabilities envisioned in the Strategic Plan.

Within the GPN, the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) has the responsibility for developing all relevant policy and guidance to support the results of UNDP’s Strategic Plan. BPPS’s staff provides technical advice to Country Offices; advocates for UNDP corporate messages, represents UNDP at multi-stakeholder fora including public-private dialogues, government and civil society dialogues, and engages in UN inter-agency coordination in specific thematic areas. BPPS works closely with UNDP’s Crisis Bureau (CB) to support emergency and crisis response. BPPS ensures that issues of risk are fully integrated into UNDP’s development programmes. BPPS assists UNDP and partners to achieve higher quality development results through an integrated approach that links results-based management and performance monitoring with more effective and new ways of working. BPPS supports UNDP and partners to be more innovative, knowledge and data driven including in its programme support efforts.

Reporting to the Head of Inclusive Growth, the Intern in the Inclusive Growth team will work closely with teams across UNDP’s Regional Hubs, policy centers and Global Policy Network, and relevant partners. S/he will support the development of tools and methods to support countries achieve priorities for inclusive growth, poverty eradication and reduction of inequality in the most effective means possible.

In particular, he/she is expected to support and contribute to the Community of Practice on Poverty and Inequality, and deliver the following tasks:

  • Undertake literature reviews, and substantive reviews of papers, reports and other documents;
  • Write short research notes and inputs for briefings, papers, and reports;
  • Provide quantitative and qualitative background research, inputs for presentations, including infographics;
  • Assist in identification of data sources and preparation of datasets;
  • Review and verification of statistical analysis and materials;
  • Assist in organization and preparation of events and note-taking;
  • Support other activities as requested, including providing logistical support to various meetings, consultations, workshops, and side events.

Competencies

  • Proven data analysis, research and writing skills, with track records in producing development research and/or engaging in development programmes;
  • Strong service and team-work orientation, cultural sensitivity and ability to work in a fast-paced multi-national environment;
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm and commitment to learning;
  • Commitment to UNDP vision, mission and values and knowledge of UN work environment an advantage.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. Program in Economics, Statistics, Public policy, or social sciences;
  • Candidates who have graduated with a Master's or PhD level programme in Economics, Statistics, Public policy, or social sciences and must start the internship within one year of the graduation date.

Experience

  • Previous experience in international development research and policy analysis is an asset;
  • Familiarity with Sustainable Development Goals, Agenda 2030 and the Human Development concepts is an asset;
  • Experience with and knowledge of Excel, Stata, R and Python.

Language

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English; competency in other UN languages is a strong asset.

Working Arrangements

  • As of 1 January 2020, Interns may be given a stipend according to UNDP Internship Policy, if it is not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government foundation or scholarship programme A stipend (up the maximum amount of US$1,000) intended to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, such as meals and transportation at the duty station. The stipend will be paid on a monthly basis and part-time internship arrangements are prorated accordingly.
  • Interns are not entitled to the privileges and immunities accorded by member states to UNDP, its officials and staff members.
  • Confidentiality and Publication of Information: Interns will respect the confidentiality of information that he/she collects or exposed to at UNDP. No reports or papers may be published based on information obtained from UNDP without the explicit written authorization of the Head of Bureaux or Office.
  • Interns are responsible for securing adequate medical insurance for the duration of the internship. UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship. Interns must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan.
  • Passports and Visas: The intern is responsible for obtaining his/her own necessary passport and visas when required. UNDP can only issue a letter stating acceptance of an individual as an intern and the conditions governing the internship.
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship.
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
  • The purpose of the internship is not to lead to further employment with UNDP, but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
  • The intern will be evaluated at the end of the contract.

The interns will be responsible for providing his or her own laptop. Internet access and printing facilities will be available at UNDP during the internship.

Expected Duration

August 2022 to November 2022. The start and ending dates are flexible. Please indicate availability in application materials. Internships last to a maximum of 6 months. Internship can be part time or full time, but full time preferred for this internship.

Conditions

In case an applicant is successfully selected, he/she will be requested to provide electronic versions of:

  • Updated resume or curriculum vitae;
  • A letter from the University confirming current enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme and graduation date. In the case of an applicant who graduated and must start the internship within one year of graduation, a copy of the applicant's diploma or a letter from the University confirming the graduate-level degree programme and graduation date;
  • A copy of his/her school transcript;
  • Proof of medical and life/accident insurance coverage;
  • A letter of endorsement from a senior faculty member, who has directly supervised him/her in the recent past and who is fully acquainted with his/her performance, with a brief description (one page maximum) setting out the reasons why s/he is seeking an internship with UNDP and what is expected from the experience.
