Overview

Produce a broadcast-quality podcast season featuring unique narratives from the IPBES community.

You have:

  • University degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in journalism, communication marketing or related field.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of communications, broadcast media and marketing.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience in international media, journalism and communications.
  • Minimum 5 years proven experience in leading the production and marketing of broadcast quality podcasts.
  • Proven track record with producing podcast analytics reports to track reach and impact.
  • Extensive experience with international organizations and international media.
  • Knowledge of biodiversity topics and the work of IPBES will be desirable.
  • Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Result of Service

• Broadcast-quality podcast season of 7 episodes of approximately 20 – 30 minutes duration each highlighting unique narratives from members of the IPBES community (as defined above) introduced by two presenters, at least one of whom will be an IPBES staff member. • IPBES podcast episodes produced, finalized, placed on a podcast hosting platform and podcast hosting directories (e.g. Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify) and support promotion on relevant social media channels by November 2025. The final episode will be finalized in February 2026 and promoted in March 2026. (Promotions to be undertaken in liaison with IPBES) • IPBES narratives reaching new decision-makers through the medium of the season.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Established in April 2012, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has a membership of 150 Governments (see www.ipbes.net) and seeks to respond to the needs of governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Under the supervision of the IPBES Head of Communications, the consultant will: • Lead the production of seven episodes, each around 30 minutes in length, of the IPBES Nature Insight Podcast. This includes developing and producing these episodes including content, scripts and structure. • Develop a comprehensive pre-production, production and post-production plan – which will include designing the programme format, arranging logistics and delivering the final product according to an agreed timetable. • Include interview(s) or discussions with members of the IPBES or broader biodiversity community in each episode. All interviews are expected to be of appropriate broadcast quality. There will be two presenters, one who is an IPBES staff member, to introduce and conclude each episode interview/discussion. • Organize and manage the logistics with an established network of professional affiliates and appropriate online platforms/tools to record all interviews remotely except for the final episode which will be recorded on-site at the twelfth session of the IPBES Plenary. • Record and produce a mixed trail to be used to promote the season online and to assist in the placement of the programme on appropriate podcast directories. • The consultant will edit and mix the raw material and provide IPBES final products of broadcast quality. • Design and implement a post-production placement and subsequent marketing strategy to bring the IPBES podcast season to the wider priority market, including paid advertising – on an appropriate platform or platforms. • Produce audiograms (illustrated sound clips) which would be used in online promotion on social media platforms. Also, liaison and support with IPBES communications team on promotion of the season on the IPBES social media platforms. • Monitor, analyse and report on the reach and other key metrics of each episode and of the season as a whole – developing key recommendations regarding future seasons. The consultancy will cover 6 months of work, distributed over an 8-month period.

Qualifications/special skills

University degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in journalism, communication marketing or related field. A first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience will be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. • Extensive knowledge and experience of communications, broadcast media and marketing • Minimum 7 years of experience in international media, journalism and communications • Within the required 7 years of experience a minimum 5 years proven experience in leading the production and marketing of broadcast quality podcasts. • Proven track record with producing podcast analytics reports to track reach and impact • Extensive experience with international organizations and international media • Knowledge of biodiversity topics and the work of IPBES will be desirable

Languages

Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
