Org. Setting and Reporting

This position in located in the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), Laayoune, in the office of the Chief Engineer.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority under the supervision of MINURSO Chief Engineer or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the Plumber will apply professional engineering knowledge and expertise in performance of the following duties and responsibilities: • Install new, test, maintain, service, repair and clean water supply systems, water treatment plants, water storage facilities, sewerage network, sewage treatment plant, pumps, control panels of all plants/ pumps and other allied equipment (water pumps, sewage pumps, electrical installations and connection). • Ensure that the water supply and sewerage work installations meet the safety standards in accordance with international codes and regulations. • Carry out scheduled periodic and emergency maintenance services on all the installations of kitchen equipment’s related to the water supply, distribution, storage of water, ablution units, solar water boiler as well those related to collection and disposal of wastewater. • Carry out the maintenance and repair of surface and submersible water pumps. • Carry out daily inspection on the sanitary facilities, related devices and fixtures in the HQ and MLB and report faults immediately to the supervisor. • Monitor the delivery of bulk water by the contractor, extracted water from well, operating the water treatment plants and maintain updated logbook. • Perform surveys and assist in preparation of material quantities and specifications for the purpose of raising shopping carts. • Provide lists of spare parts for water supply and sewage works and control panels as well as necessary tools and equipment, well in advance. • Monitor and maintain assigned tools, equipment and ensure the use of the spare parts in most productive manner. • Liaise with the unit supervisor for expert advice on water supply and sewerage works. • Provide instructions on end-use care and servicing of water supply and sewerage works. • Perform other functions as assigned by the supervisor. • Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making. • Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent certificate from recognized Technical / Trade school with job related apprenticeship training is required.

Job - Specific Qualification

A driving license category B is required.

Work Experience

A minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience in plumbing is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to one (1) for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher.

Basic knowledge in using computer applications; word processor and spread sheet (e.g., Microsoft word and Excel) for producing reports is desired.

Ability to travel by air or road and spend overnights in remote sites in the desert is required.

The incumbent has to be physically fit to lift heavy weights (pumps, cooking ranges, washing and dryer machines) and spend long hours standing and sitting (squatting, kneeling and bowing) while carrying out his/her duties, is required.

A knowledge of driving 4x4 vehicle is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French or Arabic is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
