Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located at the Plumbing Shop, Mechanical Unit (MU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The incumbent reports directly to the Foreperson of the Shop and also reports to the General Foreperson of the Unit.

The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions.

The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at the UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration.

Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Foreperson of the Plumbing Shop, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties:

-Conduct inspections of plumbing and heating systems, period overhauling of all valves, makes necessary repairs with the installation of new parts; -Replace old defective pipes, periodic cleaning out and overhaul of hot water tanks, sewer ejectors, oil separators, neutralizing tanks and sump pits, and general maintenance on all plumbing supplies and fixtures in the UN Complex; -Install, repair and maintain plumbing systems and components, plumbing fixtures, appliances and trim; -Review blue prints and specifications to determine the layout for plumbing and related materials; -Maintain sprinkler systems for the purpose of optimizing water use and keeping systems in good working order; -Assist the Foreperson in reviewing work orders generated from the computerized system; -Supervise junior staff and/or contractors to complete work order requests within the required standard turnaround time; -Maintain inventory records, equipment, tools, spare parts and materials; check levels of stocks regularly and places orders for spare parts; coordinate with other shops to complete the assigned projects as necessary; -Assume responsibilities of the daily operation of the Shop in the absence of the Foreperson; -Perform other duties as may be required.

Education High school diploma or equivalent Trade School Diploma is required.

Job - Specific Qualification A Master's Plumbers License is desirable.

A NYS Backflow Certification or equivalent is required.

Passing the Trades and Crafts Test (TCT) is a prerequisite for selection in the Trades and Crafts category in the United Nations Secretariat. Applicants who have not passed the TC test at the time of application may be invited for the test after submitting an application. Staff members who were granted a fixed-term, continuing or permanent appointment as a result of having passed a predecessor test recognized by the Office of Human Resources Management, and who have continuously held such appointments, are not required to take the new test.

Work Experience A minimum of seven years of progressive working experience in the plumbing trade is required.

Experience in the use of hand power tools and equipment related to the trade is required.

Experience in repairs and rebuilding of Condensate and Centrifugal Pumps is required.

Experience in the maintenance and repair of automatic sprinkler system is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice Appointment or assignment against this position is for an initial period of one year.

The selected candidate will be required to perform night shifts on rotation, in order to perform required off-peak maintenance work as well as to provide prompt response in case of emergencies.
